But the owner of Steinbach's Apryl Harel Photography was a star in this year's Just Watch Me! video contest for rural entrepreneurs with disabilities or health conditions. The contest is launched each year on Dec. 3, the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. A panel of judges selects finalists, and online voting determines the winners. Harel earned the most votes in the Seasoned Entrepreneur category. "I never expected to win. In fact, I almost didn't enter," she says. "It was Becky Cianflone of Community Futures in Altona who persuaded me to give it a try." Cianflone even shot the winning video. Harel has a rare heart condition, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which ended her high school education during the last week of Grade 11. She completed her diploma through Red River College Adult Education, and recently enrolled in an online professional photography certificate program, with financial help from a new Community Futures initiative called Elevate. Intrigued by photography for much of her life, Harel found a mentor in Steinbach photographer Angela Zwaagstra. Using Zwaagstra's studio allowed her to work with indoor strobe lights and backdrops for the first time. JUST WATCH ME! One of Harel's young clients enjoys some cake. Photos by Apryl Harel
