On June 1, during a gala event at the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre, JA Manitoba will induct five new members into the Manitoba Business Hall of Fame. The inductees are: • Herb Buller: Former chairman of Norcraft Canada and former CEO of Kitchen Craft Canada • Bruce Campbell: Founder of The Landmark Group Inc. • Gord Peters: President & founder of Cando Rail Services • David & Katherine Friesen: Founders of Qualico For information about the Manitoba Business Hall of Fame and the gala, visit www.mbhf.ca. INVESTING IN FINANCIAL LITERACY In early May, the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education (CFEE) presented retiring Investors Group CEO Murray Taylor with an award to recognize his leadership and commitment to helping improve financial literacy and education. Well known for a variety of philanthropic endeavours, Taylor, with the support of Investors Group, contributed to the success of CFEE's Money and Youth program. More than 430,000 copies of Money and Youth have been provided to schools and homes, free of charge, to help teachers and parents improve the financial capability of young Canadians. Some provinces, including Manitoba, have distributed copies of Money and Youth to all students in Grade 10 as a life-skills resource. Gary Rabbior, president of CFEE, noted that in addition to supporting the Money and Youth program, Investors Group has supported CFEE's Building Futures program, which works to integrate financial education into the core curriculum in Grades 4-10. Investors Group is continuing its support for CFEE programs. SMART CHOICES FOR YOUTH JUNO Award-winning musician Mitch Dorge has added another award to his collection. The Crash Test Dummies drummer is the 2016 recipient of the Sir Hugh John Macdonald Memorial Award, presented in early May by Macdonald Youth Services. The annual award recognizes an individual in Manitoba who demonstrates the values of respect and fairness toward youth and who helps young people develop important life skills. Dorge was honoured for his work speaking to youth across the country about making responsible choices. Through his In Your Face and Interactive presentations, a program supported by The Co-operators Group Ltd. since 2007, he delivered his message about positive choices to more than 194,000 students at 562 schools across Canada. His presentations cover topics such as drug and alcohol use, safe driving and mental health issues. FUN FOOD FIGHT The Altona & District Chamber of Commerce promoted local restaurants in May through its Burger Wars campaign. Diners were invited to participate through a social media campaign that offered a chance to win Altona Chamber Bucks and gift certificates from all four contestants — the Ice Cream Hut, Altona Hotel, CAPS Cafe and Ang's Pizza. The Chamber posts events and promotions online at www.shopaltona.com.
