JUNE 2016 • PAGE 9 A special performance of composer Andrew Balfour's original work Take the Indian: A Vocal Reflection on Missing Children was held at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) on May 25, in partnership with Camerata Nova - a Winnipeg vocal group. The CMHR helped organize the event as part of its "https:// humanrights.ca/about/mandate-and-museum-experience/ contributing-reconciliation" commitment to contribute to the national conversation about reconciliation in diverse and meaningful ways. Balfour was inspired to create Take the Indian after attending hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and first performed it at last year in a church. Balfour himself becomes part of the performance taking on the central role of The Wounded Indian. The performance was followed by a panel discussion that included Cory Campbell, Elder Fred Kelly and Belinda Vandenbroeck. TAKE THE INDIAN: A VOCAL REFLECTION ON MISSING CHILDREN By First Nations Voice staff The play ended with Cory Cambell "Helper" or Shkaabe using his song and drum to ward off the trickster and start Andrew on his path of travelling.
