Despite coming off a disappointing 2015 campaign, hopes are high for the Blue and Gold thanks to the return to health of quarterback Drew Willy and the addition of free agents like Winnipeg-born running back Andrew Harris, receivers Weston Dressler and Ryan Smith, and defensive lineman Keith Shologan. Investors Group Field continues to draw rave reviews from fans and players alike. If horsepower is more your thing, check out Assiniboia Downs (asdowns.com). One of Canada's most storied horse racing tracks features live racing Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and select Sundays until the second week of September. One of the highlights of the race season is the prestigious Manitoba Derby which has been run since 1930. This year's event will take place Mon., Aug. 1 and will offer a purse of $75,000. If you are planning to check it out make sure you bring along a stylish chapeau, a must- have for Derby goers. Red River Co-op Speedway (redrivercoopspeedway.ca) is home to another kind of horsepower. Located five minutes south of Winnipeg on Highway 75, it's the largest oval dirt track in Central Canada and offers bumper-to-bumper auto racing from the end of May until the first week of October. The 2016 American Association season is already well underway for the Winnipeg Goldeyes (goldeyes.com). Manager Rick Forney and Co. are looking to capture their second league crown in the past three seasons and look to have the bats and pitching to do just that. The Fighting Fish are considered one of the model franchises in minor pro baseball while Shaw Park is regarded as one of the premiere sports facilities in North America. ✹ IT'S THE BIGGEST BIRTHDAY PART OF THE YEAR. AND THE BEST PART? EVERYONE IS INVITED. Canada Day at The Forks offers fun for people of all ages presented by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries. Guests will be able to take in live entertainment on three separate stages at one of the city's most popular destinations. Live entertainment begins on the Festival Stage at 6 p.m. and includes performances by Leanne Pearson, local rockers Attica Roots and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. There will also be live performances throughout the day under the canopy beginning at 5:30 p.m. and on the Market Stage starting at 12 noon. The day's festivities will wrap up with a fireworks display at 11 p.m. The Osborne Village Canada Day celebrations are regarded as the street festival party of the year. This year's festivities will feature a massive family zone, five stages with live entertainment, 14 extended patios, the Canada Day Classic Hockey Tournament and the Village Fashion Show. Guests will even get to enjoy a free piece of Canada's birthday cake. Another time-honoured Canada Day tradition is the Canad Inns Family Fun Day at Assiniboine Park. The day-long family event begins at 1 p.m. and offers a wide range of live entertainment on the Lyric stage. Visitors will be able to sample a piece of free Canada Day birthday cake and the day will be capped off at 10:40 p.m. with a spectacular fireworks display. What better way to show your patriotism than by being part of the Canada Day Living Flag event at Shaw Park. The annual event is sponsored by the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ (downtownwinnipegbiz.com). Thousands of Winnipeggers are expected to gather beginning at 9 a.m. as part of an effort to create the country's largest living flag. If the great outdoors is more to your liking, check out Canada Day festivities at Oak Hammock Marsh. The renowned interpretive centre will host a day- long celebration in honour of the country's birthday. Visitors will be able to enjoy a horse-drawn wagon through the marsh with storyteller Allan Webb or take part in a guided canoe adventure.
