Manitoba filmmaker Sean Garrity's Borealis will open the beach screenings, with nightly film screenings projected onto a 35-foot screen situated in the water on the Gimli Beach. In this dramatic comedy film, Manitoba actor Jonas Chernick takes his daughter on an ill-planned road trip to see the northern lights in Churchill before she completely loses her sight. This touching and hilarious film will play throughout the weekend as well, and actor/writer/producer of the film Jonas Chernick will be in attendance to introduce the film and to teach a Film & T V Acting workshop through ACTR A Manitoba. For its 16th year, Gimli Film Festival has also booked the Canadian festival premiere of Michael Gondry's latest film Microbe et Gasoil, which will play twice during the weekend. Also playing will be Gondry's 2001 hit Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in the Thursday night beach screening slot. On Friday night things will really get amped up on the beach with a screening of the classic Harrison Ford/ Steven Spielberg adventure film Raiders of the Lost Ark. This epic classic is followed by a midnight beach screening of Raiders!: the Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made. This Manitoba premiere documentary follows a group of young boys who – in the early 80s – devoted 10 years of their lives to painstakingly re-creating the classic Indiana Jones film, shot-for-shot. This story plays out as the boys reunite as adults to finally film the final big-budget scene they could never do as kids. On Saturday night the festival will host a sing-a-long tribute to David Bowie and Prince. The public is invited to bring their singing voices to this unique event on the beach on Saturday night and sing along en masse in this tribute to the late, great pop stars! Sunday is Kids' Day at the Gimli Film Festival with free Sunday morning cartoons and a series of family-oriented films including The Goonies on the beach on Sunday night at 10:00 pm. Attending the festival will be Canadian director Jay Cheel (Beauty Day) with the Manitoba premiere of The 2016 Gimli Film Festival kicks off with a bang this summer on July 20th his newest film How to Build a Time Machine [HotDocs 2016]. This remarkable film explores what is perhaps the ultimate boundary, the fourth dimension, time itself! The film focuses on two different men, each uniquely obsessed with time travel. Manitoba-born filmmaker Ryan McKenna will also be in attendance with his award-winning film The Heart of Madame Sabali (Le coeur de madame Sabali), as part of the festival's French-language film series. Many more World and Canadian premieres will be hosted at this year's festival, including the Canadian premiere of famed NYC artist Tom Sachs' A Space Program, in which he and his team of bricoleurs conduct a fictional NASA-inspired "mission to mars" in front of a studio audience, with the hopes of proving once and for all that extraterrestrial life does exist! The Swedish novel adaptation A Man Called Ove will have its Canadian premiere at this year's festival as part of our Circumpolar film series from the world's most northern regions. The Norwegian documentary film Brothers – winner of Hot Docs' Best International Documentary Award – will also have its Manitoba premiere at the festival, as will local underground film celebrity Mike Maryniuk's latest short doc about a little-known Interlake artist titled No Cultural Value. Additional film series and events this year include the Winnipeg Film Group's 48 Hour Film Competition, Manitoba Short Film Showcase, LGBT TQ* film series, Icelandic film series, Ukrainian film series, Kids film series, French-language film series, New Wave Docs series and much, much more at the 2016 Gimli Film Festival! Borealis will open the beach screenings of the 2016 Gimli Film Festival, while Oscar-nominated Rams kicks off the indoor screenings. The festival runs July 20-24.
