2 WINNIPEG FREE PRESS, SATURDAY, JULY 23, 2016 G I M L I IF THERE'S ONE THING GIMLI IS FAMOUS FOR, IT'S THE LEGENDARY ISLENDINGADAGURINN, THE ICELANDIC FESTIVAL HELD ANNUALLY ON THE AUGUST LONG WEEKEND. HONOURING THE SETTLERS WHO FIRST CALLED THE SHORES OF LAKE WINNIPEG HOME IN THE 1870S, IT'S NORTH AMERICA'S SECOND-OLDEST CULTURAL FESTIVAL AND CELEBRATES 127 YEARS IN 2016. As many as 40,000 visitors make like Vikings and set sail for Gimli during Islendingadagurinn, making it one of the year's biggest events. The Gimli Film Festival, which wraps up its 16th edition this weekend, has also made a splash with screenings on the beach, full slates of impactful feature lms, shorts, documentaries and industry events. The community is working on extending the tourist season by adding events in the fall and winter such as September's Taste of the Interlake and Gimli's own Nuit Blanche. There's also the Ice Festival in March featuring a snow sculpture park, skating rink and ice-shing derby. Here are just a few of the special events in and near Gimli to take in this summer: • Gimli Film Festival (July 20-24): Check out lms from Manitoba and around the world at several venues on the nal two days of the festival this weekend. The 11-metre tall screen set up on the water off Gimli Beach is always a featured attraction. On Saturday night, bring a blanket for a David Bowie/ Prince sing-a-long at 10 p.m., then snuggle up for award-winning documentary Nuts! at 11:30 p.m. On Sunday, see made-in-Manitoba heartwarmer The Journey Home, from Winnipeg's Original Pictures. Screening at Aspire Theatre in the Gimli Unitarian Church at 3 p.m., it's the story of a boy who tries to reunite a polar bear cub with its mother. Sunday night's beach feature is The Goonies. Check out the complete festival schedule at www.gimlilm.com • Icelandic Festival (July 29-31): Take in events at the Viking Village and enjoy live music, pancake breakfasts, the sandcastle contest, parade, and food and crafts vendors. A schedule of events is posted at www. icelandicfestival.com. • Manitoba Elvis Festival (Aug. 5-7): Gimli's own Adam T. Elvis (aka Adam Tarnowski) has been rocking as an Elvis tribute artist for more than 20 years. Get all shook up when Adam and many more Elvi entertain crowds at Gimli Rec Centre, in support of Evergreen Basic Needs. • Gimli Quilt Show & Interlake Quilters' Tour (Aug. 13-14): Drop by the Gimli Curling Rink to see Quilt Show entries, then take a scenic tour to visit quilters in Matlock and other locales. • Beach Bash Concert Series: Performers include Whole Lotta Angus and Our Souls on Aug. 13. Aaron Lines & Jerry Sereda do the honours on Aug. 27. • Nearby in Winnipeg Beach, the Live on the Bandstand summer music series features Blue Noise on July 23, Dust Rhinos July 30, Rock the House July 31, High Ridge Road on Aug. 6, Free Ride Aug. 27, The Biiver Band on Sept. 3 and Whole Lotta Angus with Big Slick on Sept. 4. Check out more local events at www. winnipegbeach.ca. • Ride for MS – Biking to the Viking (Aug. 20-21): The annual round-trip fundraiser bike ride from Stonewall to Gimli includes a dinner on Saturday night and a barbecue in Stonewall at the end of the ride on Sunday. • The Wave Artists Studio Tour (Sept. 3-4): More than 40 Interlake artists open their studios to visitors during Manitoba's largest art tour.
