But one thing they're surely looking forward to in the autumn is their return to after-school dance classes at the many studios in and aroundWinnipeg. T he owner and director of L.A. Dance Academy is gearing up for another year of dance, and while registration is already underway, anyone on the fence about whether to sign up can check out the staff and studio at an Aug. 24 open house at the facility located on north Main Street at Ridgecrest Avenue. Lucy Reveco said the open house will feature free dance workshops and potential students can tour the facility at 2405 Main St. and meet the teachers and other staff. They offer lessons in all the disciplines and are one of just two studios in the city that teaches popular aerial silks classes. If you're not sure what that is, think Cirque de Soleil. "Those classes are filling up, some are full already," Reveco said. It was a big year for L.A. Dance Academy students as two groups and two solo artists competed at the Dance World Cup in Mont- Tremblant, Que., bringing home three silvers and one bronze. "I'm extremely proud and humble for their experience and opportunity because for us… winning a medal is a bonus, but for them to get the exposure and to have the experience out there was phenomenal and it was fantastic for us to represent Winnipeg and do as well as we did at the Dance World Cup," Reveco said. Students from Selkirk's Evolution Dance helped celebrate a milestone for the dance school this year at their annual recital at Winnipeg's Centennial Concert Hall. Co-director Andrea Myers said the school celebrated a decade of dance and recognized the students who make it all possible. "We had so many kids that have been with us since Day 1, so we recognized them and thanked them for all the years and we're looking forward to the future," Myers said. Myers and co-director Sonja Brown oversee about 500 students each year in disciplines including jazz, hip hop, tap, ballet, creative movement and musical theatre and are thrilled to be teaching it all again this fall in their 62,000 square-foot location in Selkirk's Town Plaza. It's their third year there, and Myers said the space is great, for students as well as their parents who have a spacious lobby to relax in and plenty of parking. Parking is a must, since their students drive from locales around the Interlake and Eastman and even Winnipeg. "We're a really big rural school, which is kind of unique." Myers said. "We have a family that comes every Saturday from Whitemouth. We're so grateful that we have these families that come all that way, and I guess that they're grateful too that they have somewhere their kids can dance at an actual studio." Rising Star Academy of Arts is gearing up for another busy autumn season of dance, music and theatre, all in one location situated on Regent Avenue West near near Lagimodiere Boulevard. Artistic director Allison Banman says she believes Rising Star is the only studio in Manitoba to offer all three disciplines in one location. "It's much more convenient for parents — they can come out basically one or two nights a week, get all the kids covered in the majority of their activities and have lots of extra, spare, free family time," she said. Rising Star is also the only place in the city that offers Angelina Ballerina Dance Academy classes for four- to six-year-olds. Based on the popular character, the program was developed by a psychologist and early-years educator and features activities and exercises based on a story which includes moral and social values. The story helps keep the kids interested. "It's fun because the kids love Angelina and Marco and all of her other friends," Banman said. "It's very popular." Rising Star's theatre group just finished up their second year at the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, and the music program, which features predominantly private classes, is expanding this year to include a rock band program for students ready to join a band. Rising Star is located at 10-1600 Regent Avenue West, near Lagimodiere Boulevard. For more information, visit risingstaracademy.ca. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School welcomes well over a thousand student dancers every year, with classes offered every day of the week by the RWB Recreational Division in its facilities downtown at 380 Graham Ave. The recreational division's programming is accessible to dancers of all ages and abilities. Along with ballet, the RWB Recreational Division also offers instruction in tap, musical theatre, modern, conditioning, jazz and hip hop, and boys-only classes are offered for four- to nine-year olds. Kids as young at three can get moving with the recreational division's Movers & Shakers and Creative Movement programs. Classes are offered both after school and on weekends. "Our faculty features well qualified and motivating instructors who ensure that every student has the opportunity to reach their personal potential," said Larah Luna, the RWB's director of marketing and communications. "These teachers are experienced and professional and have been chosen not only for their knowledge of dance but also because of their passion and commitment to teaching in the studio." Dancers in the recreational division can even have a shot at performing on the RWB's big stage as a number of students audition each year and can be accepted into the RWB's professional school. "Students who participate in RWB's recreational dance programs are invited to audition for select RWB Company productions in Winnipeg like the endearing holiday favourite, The Nutcracker," Luna said. "Students also have the opportunity to participate in dance conventions, competitions and festivals. Additional benefits also include subsidized programs for boys and discounted tickets to RWB shows. "Recital costumes are included in the tuition cost," Luna said. "This adds up to huge savings as the RWB's wardrobe department is dedicated to designing costumes that make the RWB School students shine on stage." For more information about enrolling for this year's RWB Recreational Division dance classes, please see their website, rwb.org. Participants can be registered in-person at the RWB for the session of classes that starts Sept. 11 and wraps up in spring 2017. The deadline for registration or to change classes is Oct. 1. L.A.
