It precedes Employment Insurance. It precedes the Canada Pension Plan. It precedes Medicare; yet, the historic compromise still stands. The principles on which the system was built still hold true today and the WCB remains relevant in a changing world because its service is integral to the social fabric of Manitobans. In the years to come, the WCB will continue to evolve to serve the needs of the people of this province; balancing what is right for the worker, right for employers and right for Manitoba as a whole. Quick facts about the Workers Compensation Board THE WCB IS A WORKPLACE INJURY AND DISABILITY INSURANCE AGENCY. IT IS 100 PER CENT FUNDED BY EMPLOYERS. Replacement of lost income Healthcare treatments and payment of medication costs Employment retraining Lump sum payments for permanent impairments Benefits to partners and children in the event of a workplace fatality WCB SERVICES AND BENEFITS: The WCB started out with only 14 employees (this included a secretary to the board, chief medical officer, statistician and claims officer, bookkeeper, two claims clerks, a recorder to the Board, two stenographers, a filing clerk and typist, clerk and messenger, two inspectors and an assistant to the commissioner). Today, there are over 600 STAFF AT THE WCB. 76% of the Manitoba workforce is covered by the WCB.
