"The exterior is virtually maintenance-free. All the
components of a new house — the roof, the fur-
nace, the hot water tank — are all brand new and
they all have a warranty," swan says. "Everything is
pretty much a known. There are no surprises with
a furnace that gives out or a house that needs
painting. Predictable monthly expenses are very
important."
