You'll need measurements and pictures,
which are helpful to the designers.
To start, there will be some digging to
excavate a base for the "structure" of
your landscaping. This is important to
ensure things stay put, with no heaving
or shifting.
One new innovation is polymeric sand.
using it between paving stones after
installation prevents unsightly weed
growth and erosion between the joints,
and it keeps burrowing ants at bay.
As for the type of paving stone, more
people are choosing a natural look as
opposed to a manufactured look.
"Last year, we brought in Bridgewood
which looks like an old wood plank,"
says Wiebe. "If you want to talk about
something that's easy care — this will
never rot, it will never twist."
Barkman has also introduced a line
called Terra nova.
"It goes together like a jigsaw, but it
looks like hardwood so when you look
out your patio doors, it can actually look
like your living space is flowing continu-
ously right out the door," Wiebe says.
Larger pavers are popular, with some
as large as 12-by-24 inches. Larger pav-
ers, although heavier, can be installed
much more quickly.
