Builders can meet the target by incorporating 14 specific upgrades, including increased attic, basement and exterior insulation; low-flow shower heads, permanently wired car timers and a specified amount of LED lighting. A second option gives builders more flexibility to choose a range of technologies to meet or exceed the 20% target, such as solar panels. Maric and Arlt Homes have both built ultra-efficient luxury homes on Rose Lake Court in Bridgwater Trails. They say making the shift to envi- ronmentally friendly products is not exactly cheap at the outset, but that doesn't mean change is impossible. As builders, they're leading the way. "When a lot of people find out the cost, it's tough if they're budget-con- scious going in. With that being said, making the change can be as easy as adding energy-efficient lightbulbs or a zone heating system," says Arlt. "When it comes down to it, I believe that homeowners are happy to be doing their part to save the environment."
