T he days fly by from the first day of school to Christmas. There are so many places to be and so many things to get done. A breather — a little getaway — would be nice. That getaway can happen at Elkhorn Resort and Spa, a premier family resort located next to the Riding Mountain UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, about a two and a half hour's drive from Winnipeg and an hour from Brandon. Marketing and events coordinator Christina Caperina says they've been actively upgrading the resort for the past few years to make things even more comfortable for their guests. "Our special addition is the brand new pool facility which opened last year and it features a 10,000-square-foot pool with a 'beach entry' kiddie pool area, a bucket brigade and lily pad walk, lap lane, two hot tubs and a 20-foot waterslide with splash lane, which really adds an exciting component to the space," says Caperina. "I've been down it a few times and I never get tired of it!" There is a fresh new look, as well, with upgrades of hotel- room bathrooms and hallways, new carpeting and fresh wall- paper. And there is always something special for those who just want to stay in and relax. "We have onsite the Solstice Spa, where you can treat your- self to a dip in our Equinox mineral pool, or you can get a Vichy shower treatment," she says. The facility also boasts two huge hot tubs that can accom- modate 10 to 15 people. "One is indoor and the other is outdoors and they really pro- vide a relaxing element for the adults," says Caperina. "The facility also has a games room, a pool table and a foos- ball table, and located in the corner of the building, you'll find a really nice fitness area which overlooks the horse stables." In 2012, the restaurant underwent expansion from a small bar to a larger bar area and a formal dining room, and in Janu- ary 2016, the resort welcomed a new chef. Dining comes under the watchful eye of former Nova Scotian Chef Jeff Gill, who completed the Culinary Arts Course at the critically acclaimed Culinary Institute of Canada in Charlotte- town, P.E.I. He has been an active member in the Canadian Culinary Federation-Lethbridge & Edmonton branches. The family-friendly Buffalo Bar features comfort food, while the 10 Steakhouse is a more formal, quiet setting. "It's ideal for those who want to take their time and enjoy their companions," Caperina says. Plenty of activities will keep you busy outdoors. Guests can venture a little farther afield into Riding Mountain National Park, where Parks Canada provides fall guided experiences. "On Fridays and Saturdays, they offer the Call of the Wild Caravan, where a guide will take you to interesting places along park roadways and trails so you can stop and listen to elk sending their mating calls," she says. "Friday mornings, there is Paddle Clear Lake, another guided tour that takes you along the shores of the lake, where you can enjoy the changing colours of the foliage." Sunday mornings feature a more challenging three hour-ish hike to Gorge Creek. "It is one of the most scenic hikes in Manitoba," she says. The resort itself is offering fall and winter packages, such as the two- or three-night Autumn Breakaway. "In winter we have our Delight in Winter package, which includes half-day rentals of skis, snowshoes or skates and includes a $30 voucher for the Buffalo Bar," says Caperina. "During the holidays, we usually plan family-friendly activities with crafts such as T-shirt decorating or snow painting, and food crafts like marshmallow snowmen or cupcake decorat- ing," she says. "Over the past few years, we've had someone come up and offer dogsledding on a two-kilometre run around the grounds," she adds. "That's really fun — if you've never tried it before, they go really fast and the dogs are so excited to go on their run." Christmas and New Year's buffets are offered for those wanting to get away at Christmas. "We also have a skating rink on site so our guests can get their workout in and skate on the little pond." Details for the getaways are available online at elkhornresort.mb.ca.
