RAS Creative By Trevor Greyeyes The warm baritone voice of Lucien "Looch" Spence was heard bouncing off the walls at The Pyramid Cabaret for the official release of his latest CD. Now I have to be honest here be- cause I've known Looch for years since I used to work for his father Dennis Spence as the Thundervoice News edi- tor back in the early 2000's. I knew Looch had a love for music as he was always singing some- thing around the office in between sales calls. And he entered the NCI Jam more than once. For Lucien Spence, in many ways this CD is his greatest hits recording. "I guess so," chuckles Spence, "we did a couple old and couple new because my first CD release wasn't recorded all that great. The production and qual- ity wasn't done professionally." Inside, under the hazy multi- coloured lights on October 22, Looch would sometimes just grab the guitar to sing an original by himself on stage while at other times he was joined by a four piece band. Looch said it took him about ten years of saving and scrimping to come up with the funds for this CD project. For him, it was a real labour of love. "Every song that I have on the album is a piece of my life," said Looch. And he had a variety of special guests show up for what Looch called his CD Release Concert. Looch said, "I just made calls, but I couldn't think of everybody, but I tried to think of as many as I could to just get together and perform." He tries to get out to as many other events that other artists invite him to. For the last few years, Looch has made Portage LaPrairie home where he's devel- oped quite the following. He even had a an article in the Portage Herald detailing his CD release. "I've got a lot of exposure from just busking at Sobey's in Por- tage," said Looch. And currently Looch is work- ing on Rez Radio that is owned and operated by Long Plains First Nation. He enjoys it and tries to include as many of the local artists as he can on his show. "Music is a blessing and a gift," said Looch. "And if there's anybody doing music out there or is learning or just trying to write songs. Just keep it going and believe in yourself." All I have to say is thank you very much Looch for gifting those who know you with your music. Chi meegwetch. CD release for everyone's favorite "Looch" Lucien Spence sings his heart out at CD book launch.
