As for more dramatic light features, Robinson
notes that they have moved beyond the tradi-
tional dining room chandelier. Many homeowners
are putting statement pieces in foyers — big or
dramatic fixtures that not only illuminate their en-
trance but create an impression that's visible from
the street. Chandeliers and statement pieces are
also moving into the bathroom, creating a relax-
ing mood, particularly in spa-like master en suites.
Robinson Lighting celebrated its 80th year in 2016,
so the company has seen a lot of trends come and
go, from Tiffany lamps and the pole lamps of the
1960s to the shiny polished brass of the 1980s and
the verdigris style of 1990s light fixtures designed
to look like weathered copper.
And of course, some of those looks even come
back with twists and tweaks.
Robinson says pole lamps are back, and the co-
loured-glass style of Tiffany lights — now sold as
"art glass" — still has a place in the lighting market,
sometimes incorporating LEDs as the light source.
"We're such a style business," she says. "We're more
like a fashion industry than we used to be."
