INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR BUILDING VALUE Group of Companies Design-Build Experts FWSgroup.com E ngineering and Geoscience Week is held in conjunction with National Engineering Month and highlights the vital role engineering and geoscience play in so many parts of our everyday lives. From the roads we drive on to our smartphones and the medical technology that keeps us healthy, it's the work of engineers and geoscientists and their designs and technological advances that help us enjoy our lives, work efficiently and stay safe. Provincial Engineering and Geoscience Week also serves to promote careers in engineering and geoscience and to celebrate Manitoba's excellence in both fields. As part of Provincial Engineering and Geoscience Week, Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba, the association that regulates professional engineers and geoscientists in Manitoba, will again host children's activities at Kildonan Place Mall to give Manitoba youth a glimpse at what makes engineering and geoscience exciting career choices. On both Sundays — March 5 and 12 — from noon to 4 p.m. kids of all ages will have the chance to get a taste of engineering and geoscience, whether by building structures from candy, using drinking straws to bridge a waterway or creating an electrical circuit. The annual Spaghetti Bridge Competition, which supports Winnipeg Harvest, will be held March 9-11, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Kildonan Place. The sessions on March 9 and 10 only involve pre-registered school groups, but Saturday's event is open to all kindergarten to Grade 12 students. The competition, which has been held annually since 1995, involves students working to build the strongest span using only pasta and white or wood glue. The structures are then tested to see how much force they can take before structural failure. For every pound the bridges withstand, Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba will donate one dollar to Winnipeg Harvest. Competitors are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations for Winnipeg Harvest. Builders of the strongest span in each grade category will win a cash prize and take part in the competition for the grand prize. While all activities are free, pre-registration is encouraged for the Spaghetti Bridge Competition. For more information on the competition, prizes and registration, visit apegm.mb.ca/SpaghettiBridge.html. Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba will also be hosting an information booth March 9 and 10 to promote the professions of engineering and geoscience to visitors. ❚ ENGINEERING & GEOSCIENCE WEEK EVENTS Manitoba's Provincial Engineering and Geoscience Week for 2017 is set for March 5-12.
