GET READY FOR THE GAMES BY JIM TIMLICK ❙ FOR THE FREE PRESS Many of the participants taking part in this year's Manitoba 55 Plus Games in the Killarney- Turtle Mountain area will undoubtedly feel some pressure to perform. The same might also be said of the event's organizers. The 2017 Games will mark the third time Killarney has hosted the province's largest annual multi-sport event, making it the first rural Manitoba community to do so. After staging two of the most successful events in the history of the Games in 1996 and 2010, organizers know they have a tough act to follow this time out — and that's just fine with Rob MacTavish, co-chair of the 2017 Games' host committee. "I guess you could say there is some pressure to provide a quality experience for people," MacTavish says. "We know we've got to be ready." This year is the 35th anniversary of the Games, which are co-ordinated by the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults in Manitoba (ALCOA- MB). More than 1,000 athletes between the ages of 55 and 100-plus will take part in more than 20 sports at this year's Games, scheduled for June 13-15 in Killarney and nearby Wawanesa. MacTavish and fellow co-chair Bob Moore have no doubts Killarney will be ready for the Games. Both say the community has a tremendous base of volunteer support, which has been the key to successfully hosting events such as the Games and the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts curling championship. In 2010, more than 350 volunteers pitched in to help at the Games and Moore says organizers expect a similar number this time around. "I think what gave the Games to us is our tremendous volunteer response," MacTavish adds. "We have a good corps of people who are keen to be involved."
