MEETING AND GREETING:
It's been a "meeting place" for more than 6,000 years, having proven popular among early Aboriginals, European fur traders, and Métis settlers, but its most recent attribute is that it has been named (from more than 6,000 nominees) as Canada's top public space in the Great Places in Canada contest. So it's no surprise downtown jewel The Forks (www.theforks.com) continues to rank as Winnipeg's most popular tourist destination — attracting more than 4 million visitors each year to the juncture of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.
The site's renowned river trail (a Guinness record- holder for longest naturally-frozen skating trail) is graced by a series of architecturally-stunning warming huts, while a nearby toboggan run and snowboard park provide even more opportunity for winter fun. There are also two skating rinks — one Olympic-sized, the other nestled under a canopy in the plaza — as well as 1.2 km of off-river skating trails.
