34 women a who's who special edition s ome say beauty is only skin deep, but Julie Jerome knows the depth can be much more profound. The owner of Julie Jerome Designs helps women feel beautiful, applying permanent eyeliner, eyebrows and providing areola restoration services for clients who have had mastectomies or breast augmentation, and for those whose areola are lightened, discoloured or unbalanced in size. The colour of an areola can be darkened, blended or enhanced with tattooing. Jerome believes she's the only professional in Winnipeg who is trained to perform areola restoration and 3D nipple simulation using the Softap Hand Method, which is less invasive than using tattoo guns. Instead, she gently taps hypoallergenic pigments into the skin using an individually wrapped sterile implement that looks similar to a pen. "It is the gentlest way to implant colour into the skin. There's no vibration, no noise and it is extremely delicate," she says, adding the gentle approach is particularly comforting for women who have undergone mastectomies. "These women have been through so many surgeries, and I find it wonderful to be able to offer them a relaxing, comfortable environment. We can chat without having to hear the buzzing noise of a tattoo gun. I think it's just priceless for these clients," she says. "Another benefit about using the Softap Hand Method is that the results are so natural and there is more control compared to using a tattoo gun. By stippling in the pigment, I can create varying degrees of solidity or shading. I can use multiple colours to create the most natural look, as well as multiple implements. It's quite amazing." Many women are opting for microbladed hair strokes for brows. However, Jerome says most don't know that skin type plays a huge role in how these hair strokes heal. "This is one of the reasons I love doing shaded or powdered brows. If the client is used to shading in their brows everyday, they will love how natural and soft their brows look after their appointment." The hypoallergenic pigments were developed in California and have been used for more than 20 years. "In fact, the same woman who developed the pigments and implements still owns and operates Softap together with her daughters," Jerome says. Clients need to wait a year after surgery for their scars to heal before they can undergo these cosmetic options — and some wait many years or even decades before they decide to proceed. Adding to the effect, Jerome also provides collagen induction therapy and scar camouflage services. "The skin needling involves 'damaging' the skin with tiny pinpoint puncture wounds to stimulate the production of new collagen, which plumps out the skin. It doesn't strip away the healthy epidermis so the healing period is very quick," she says. For breast cancer survivors, this type of treatment can be combined with the 3D nipple simulation and areola restoration. It also works well for all types of scarring, including keloid, hypertrophic and contracture scars caused by burns. It can even be used to improve the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles and stretch marks. ❚ Julie Jerome, owner of Julie Jerome Designs New clients are always welcome at Julie Jerome Designs, located at 7-915 Mcleod Ave. within the Rewind Laser Clinic.
