Find out how the Exchange District got its name and the role of agriculture in shaping Portage and Main. One-hour tour at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 28. Meet in front of City Hall. Tour conducted by Keystone Agricultural Producers. EXCHANGE DISTRICT BIZ DEATH AND DEBAUCHERY WALKING TOURS * NEW * Take a walk on the wild side and explore the dark secrets that made Winnipeg the "Wickedest City in the Dominion". Explore a different side of Winnipeg's history with the Exchange District's Death and Debauchery Walking Tour, featuring drunk mayors, angry mobs, prostitutes on horseback, and even a few executions. Tours meet in Old Market Square. FRONTLINES: THE FUTURE OF HERITAGE – PRESENTATION AND PANEL DISCUSSION Join leaders in the city's design and development communities as they present and discuss innovative ideas for the future of the Hudson Bay building. By seizing opportunities and conquering challenges, creative heritage re-purposing has the power to connect us with our past while helping to provide for a sustainable future. HAUNTED HISTORY WALKING TOUR Join one of Winnipeg's most experienced guides and author of the book Haunted History: Ghost Stories from the Heart of the Continent on a tour of haunted history. The walk will combine historical fact with ghost stories connected to three well-known Winnipeg buildings. Starting at Vaughan Street Jail, the tour will proceed to the Manitoba Legislature and conclude at Dalnavert Museum on Carlton Street. Tours will run at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm both days and are 45 minutes long. Pre-registration for tours will begin on May 1, with a maximum of 30 people per tour – contact the Heritage Winnipeg office at info@heritagewinnipeg.com or 204.942.2663 to register. Please meet in Memorial Park directly across from the Vaughan Street Jail. HISTORICAL LOCOMOTIVE CN 2747 (1926) * NEW * Come and see the first steam locomotive built in the Western region that was built in Transcona! The CN 2747 is on display in Rotary Heritage Park, located north of Kildare Ave. on Plessis Rd. There is a small parking lot available in the park. Visitors will be able to access the fenced-off area around CN 2747, get an up-close look at the engine while learning about its history and the Transcona Museum's ongoing efforts to "SAVE 2747". Please note that visitors will not be able to physically enter the locomotive. A guide will be at the site to talk about CN 2747 between 11:00am and 3:00pm. TRANSCONA DOWNTOWN WALKING TOUR * NEW * Two tours offered on historic downtown Transcona! On the first tour, learn about the history of the 105-year-old community and how the railway helped put this town on the map. Find traces of Old Transcona, and hear stories of the town's founding, growth, and brief tenure as a city. The second tour offered will be on the murals that grace buildings in downtown Transcona. We will look at the meanings behind the art, the artists and the history of the building on which they are painted. Which murals do you want to know more about? These tours will alternate throughout the day, starting with the historic tour. GHOST SIGNS WALKING TOUR Join tour guide Matt Cohen and walk the Exchange District in search of ghost signs. Discover the area's fading promotional signage and learn more about the companies that called these warehouses home. This 90-minute tour will allow participants to travel back in time and get to know the businesses behind the ads and the impact they played in shaping the landscape of the district. HAMILTON HOUSE HISTORY PRESENTATION * NEW * The North East Winnipeg Historical Society has partnered with the Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation for a two-hour long presentation by Linda Horodecki (retired from the Manitoba Legislative Library), on her research of Hamilton House, & Dr. Thomas Glendenning Hamilton's famous physic studies & experiments. She has done research at the University of Manitoba Archives, City of Winnipeg Archives, Henderson's Directories, and the Winnipeg Free Press. Participants are encouraged to bring their stories and pictures for an open Q & A session. In addition, Ruth Wright will read stories of the area. Refreshments and snacks will be served. FORKS NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE WALKING TOUR 6,000 years in 60 minutes A Guided Interpretive Tour of The Forks National Historic Site Discover The Forks' hidden history! Take a 6,000 year journey with a Parks Canada interpreter and uncover what lies beneath your feet. Learn the fate of the four fur trading posts and hear the epic stories behind this meeting place. Through curious objects and colourful characters, the history of The Forks comes to life in this easy one hour walking tour.
