ST. JAMES-ASSINIBOIA SCHOOL DIVISION Select programming through the St. James-Assiniboia School Division will be available online for the first time this fall. Courses in digital marketing, business writing, web design and teaching adults are just some of the offerings available. Wanda Taylor, Manager of Continuing Education, who oversees the dozens of courses offered primarily at John Taylor Collegiate and Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, said the time has come to expand the reach of Continuing Education and enable people to work and learn at their own pace. "I think we're attracting a different type of customer (with online programs), perhaps those people who don't want to come to a class and feel more comfortable learning in the comfort of their own home at their leisure. They don't have to commit to coming in every Monday night, for example, they can do it before bed or right when they get up in the morning. It provides a little more convenience," she said. There are generally between 1,500 and 2,000 registrations each year targeting those wanting to experiment and learn some new skills or blow the dust off some old ones. People as young as 18 and as old as 80 regularly sign up for a variety of courses, including perogy making, Spanish, arm knitting, belly dancing and Twitter, she said. "We have so much to offer, they have to pick and choose. That's the beauty of Continuing Education. We're always coming up with new ideas and new courses," she said. While promotional material is sent out during the summer, classes won't begin until September. That's followed by the winter-spring programming, which starts in January. Prices vary depending on the type of course and how long it runs, but a general rule of thumb is one-evening courses cost $25 while four- to eight- week programs will cost anywhere from $55 to $95. A computer course, for example, is more expensive because of the software required. Learning about Windows 10 for three hours over four consecutive Mondays is priced at $79. Drawing with pencil crayon, meanwhile, which requires students to purchase a number of art supplies themselves, costs $55. St. James-Assiniboia Continuing Education also offers adult education courses where you can earn a certificate as a Health Care Aide, a Health Unit Clerk, Veterinary Hospital Office Assistant or Educational Assistant. "You can get certified in those disciplines, go out on a practicum in a real-life situation that will lead to a fulfilling career," Taylor said. Adult education courses range from $3,045 (Health Care Aide) to $6,995 (Veterinary Hospital Office Assistant). ❚ We have so much to offer, they have to pick and choose. That's the beauty of Continuing Education. We're always coming up with new ideas and new courses." CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES OFFERED BY THE ST. JAMES-ASSINIBOIA SCHOOL DIVISION THIS FALL
