What do you need in a home?
CMHC advises would-be homeowners to think about what their needs will
be five or 10 years down the road. There are several elements to consider,
including:
• LOCATION: Do you want to live downtown or in the country? Do you
want a family-friendly neighbourhood with schools nearby, or would you
rather be close to nightlife? Do you want to be able to walk to work or live
near a transit hub?
• SIZE MATTERS: Decide how many bedrooms you need now, and think
about whether you'll be adding to your family in the future. How many
bathrooms do you need? Is a home office important? Do you want an
attached garage? Do you want a large yard with space for outdoor activities
or would you prefer one that requires less maintenance?
• SPECIAL FEATURES: Do you want a swimming pool? Air conditioner?
Is energy efficiency and environmental responsibility important to you? Will
you want features that allow you to age in place?
• LIFESTYLE: Are there children in your future? Do you have older
children who plan to move out soon? Do you have older parents who may
move in? Do you want to be close to a park, or live near family and friends?
