"It's very affordable to live out here – lots start at $94,900, and you can get
into a beautiful home for $349,900," Wiebe says. "And because St. Adolphe
is about 10 minutes from the south end of the city, it's basically a suburb.
You're out in the country, but close to the city."
Ron Tardiff, Ventura's sales representative in La Salle, says several factors are
combining to draw more city folk out to rural developments.
"The first attraction is the pocketbook," he says. "In rural areas, lot costs
are lower, as are taxes. And not only are lots cheaper, they're bigger, with
average lots in Prairie View Lakes being 60 feet by 156 feet, versus an
average of about 40 feet by 110 feet in the city.
"You get so much more in a home in rural developments. However, while
that's important, there's another factor that's drawing people to communities
outside the city."
That factor, he says, is lifestyle.
"One of the biggest pluses of living outside the city is that the drive back
home gives you time to decompress – you can think or listen to music as
you're driving home on the highway without being stuck in traffic. Then, once
you get home, it's quiet, and you have a big yard and home to enjoy. It's also
easier to get to know your neighbours because the lifestyle is so much more
laid-back and relaxing."
