PRAIRIE EYE CARES… Kalem Martens is an 11 year old superhero. A smart, active, fun loving kid who has lived with an eye condition since birth that makes him that much more special: Kalem has bilateral chorioretinal colobomas and bilateral iris colobomas. In a nutshell, this means that Kalem's pupils, rather than being round, are shaped like a keyhole. In the back of each eye, his retinas have a small space in the tissue. This eye condition has left Kalem with mildly reduced vision and a much better understanding of the eye and its structures and functions than most kids. Pictured is Kalem's clay depiction of what colobomas look like and how they affect the eyes and his daily living. As his Optometrist and as an advocate for the continued advancement of eye care education, I am incredibly proud of this young man. It takes great courage to embrace our differences and share them with the world, thus, educating those around us. I appreciate this display of strength from Kalem, a reallife superhero.
