ALL THAT
Glows
See your home in a better light
IT'S SURPRISING HOW LIGHTING IS ALMOST AN
AFTERTHOUGHT WHEN PEOPLE ARE DECORATING A
SPACE, RENOVATING OR EVEN BUILDING FROM SCRATCH.
>> HOMEOWNERS OFTEN FEEL left in
the dark when it comes to achieving the perfect balance
of function and fashion in lighting.
Experts say it doesn't have to be that way, especially
with all the options that make it possible to think outside
of the junction box while still being practical.
Lighting is one of the most important elements of any
room. Not only is it necessary (who honestly wants to
julienne carrots by candlelight?), it creates a specific
mood. Bright task lighting is a must in the kitchen, but
it's not what most people desire in the bedroom.
And yet, getting the right glow is often one of the last
things on the decorating to-do list.
"It's surprising how lighting is almost an afterthought when
people are decorating a space, renovating or even building
from scratch," says Mical Secter, showroom manager at Total
Lighting Sales.
Secter advises customers to come in armed with a game plan
that includes photos or drawings, a vision of what they would
like to have and an understanding of what their structural
and electrical network can realistically accommodate.
"For example, a customer will come in looking for a real
funky chandelier they saw on a home decorating show, but
that piece may not be compatible with their ceiling," he says.
"This is particularly true with recessed lighting (pot lights). If
the ceiling can't support it, it won't work. So that's when we
look for other options that will work."
