Even floor and table lamps still have their place, and many can
emulate a sculpture one might find in an art gallery, especially if
powered through an outlet that is out of sight.
"Any chance you have to position an outlet flush with your floor as
opposed to on your wall, do it," Secter advises. "Especially when
going through a renovation or building new. It makes the fixture
that much more esthetically pleasing."
Secter says there's also been a shift away from having a collection
of look-alike fixtures.
"At one time, the goal was to have the lighting
fixtures and the wattage all matchy-matchy. That
was almost a rule. The reality is that lamp shades,
bases and bulbs, from colour to style, do not have
to be identical to create a great-looking room."
Brett Robinson, president of Robinson Lighting,
says he saw a lot of warm brass finishes and dark
metals with soft gold accents on display at the
Dallas International Lighting Show in January.
