Some of the more popular designs include privacy panels, frosted glass walls and even louvered windows. While a deck is a great place to soak up some sun, you can get too much of a good thing. Pelland says that's why shaded structures, including overhead canopies, have become a more common feature. His advice to anyone considering building a deck is to remember that it doesn't have to be done in one fell swoop. Many homeowners will have a deck built in phases, in large part to keep costs under control. "Scale the project to your needs and have a growth plan," he says. "We see a lot of that, especially with composite customers." Dueck says the sooner you start planning, the more time you'll have to properly design your backyard retreat, and to deal with permits and potential headaches such as conditional use variances.
