Long-time Winnipeg builders Diego Vassallo, president of KDR Homes, and Rob Swan, co- founder of Huntington Homes, often put both kitchen extras into custom homes and show homes. It's all about meeting clients' needs and showing potential customers what's out there. A spice kitchen is a small room off the main kitchen that has its own venting system, range or cooktop, sink and often a microwave oven and dishwasher. More importantly, it has a door that prevents odours and oil particles from spreading to an open kitchen and great room. Vassallo says his company began featuring spice kitchens in some show homes about four years ago. "We started putting them in our larger show homes in the areas that we feel the demographic likes them," he says. "We're finding that as we put them in, they're becoming more popular. It separates those odours from getting into the majority of the house. They probably use that kitchen more often on a day-to-day basis." Swan says Huntington Homes started getting requests for spice kitchens eight to 10 years ago. Sizes vary, but the spice kitchens his clients add are typically about six-by-eight feet. "Often their spice kitchen will be large enough that they're using that as a pantry as well, but often they'll have both," he says.
