Be prepared: For best results, do some prep work. Fix nail holes,
make any necessary repairs and consider painting the wall with a
wallpaper primer.
The most crucial step is reading the instructions, Kuchniak says.
"They're all very simple to follow and they're there for a reason.
There's a type of backing that's on your wallcovering and the most
important thing about that wallcovering and the install is what is
the backing."
Most wallpaper used to be pre-pasted, which meant wetting the
back of a strip and quickly applying it to the wall before smoothing
it in place. Nowadays, pre-pasted types are in the minority. Some
products have a backing that lets you apply adhesive to the back
of the paper or directly onto the wall with a roller or brush.
Better yet, the new peel-and-stick Nuwallpaper from WallPops! can
be removed and reapplied if you make a mistake, and it's easy to
strip if you decide to change the look.
So, back to the joke about putting up wallpaper with your
significant other.
Overall, hanging wallcovering isn't any more fun today than it was
a few decades ago, Kuchciak says. But there's no need to have a
divorce lawyer on speed dial.
"Chances are they're only doing one small wall so they can
get through that together."
