Formed in 2002 with the merger of the Valley Rehab Centre and the Association for Community Living, the charitable non-profit organization provides pro- grams for adults living with an intellectual disability in Winkler, Morden, and the surrounding area. CEO Kimberly Nelson has been work- ing in the field since she was 18, and she's been with Gateway Resources since 2003, starting as a group home residential man- ager and moving to the role of Director of Programs before she was named CEO four years ago. "I love finding creative ways to support the individuals we work alongside with. I love finding ways to empower staff to do their role as a direct-support professional to engage, facilitate and promote all the servi- ces we offer. The work we do every day is an accomplishment," Nelson says. "There isn't an average day for any of us here. Every day has its own celebrations and challenges, but we all work as a team." The organization provides services and programs to 150 people. Empowering them to live full and productive lives is a priority for everyone at Gateway. Meeting clients' needs means providing an environ- ment where participants and residents are valued members of their community, with opportunities to engage in meaningful work, spend time with friends and enjoy recreational options such as swimming. "We have four divisions at Gateway Re- sources: the Operations Division, the Life Enrichment Program Division, the Resi- dential Division, and the Human Resour- ces Division. The focus of all divisions is on each person's emotional, physical, mental and spiritual well-being," Nelson says. "Through the services we offer, individ- uals have access to a wide range of supports and activities based on their unique inter- ests, needs and goals." The vast list of services includes life skills such as literacy, resume writing, computer safety, budgeting, friendships and conflicts, healthy eating, and work etiquette, among many others. "The Life Enrichment Program Division provides many educational, recreational, and work placement opportunities to the individuals we serve. This division consists of the following programs: The Life Skills Program, the Community Learning Pro- gram and the Learning Centre Program. We have 75 volunteer opportunities in the community," Nelson says. "The Operations Division engages par- ticipants in recycling for the City of Wink- ler and surrounding areas, does specialty packaging for 3M, and produces pallets and crates for a variety of local businesses in the south central region. The Residen- tial Division provides person-centred, hol- istic supports that empower adults living with intellectual disabilities to live full and meaningful lives in a group-home setting or in a supported independent living pro- gram. The successes we celebrate are the ways in which we get to empower the indi- viduals we support." Gateway employs a large staff who con- tribute a wide array of valuable skills, and it prides itself on its many community part- nerships. With support from donors, the organiz- ation has purchased a wheelchair-accessible van, completed renovations to residen- tial homes and directed funds toward the maintenance and upkeep of its properties and buildings. Countless opportunities are available to volunteers with an interest in making a dif- ference, and they often find that their lives are enhanced and enriched as much as the people they are there to assist. "Volunteers have come to Gateway and realized the number of different things we do, whether it's helping plant a garden at a home, teaching a group of individuals how to sew, or sharing a game of crokinole," Nel- son says. "These volunteers become part of our team and are valued members." ■ For more information, visit the website at gatewayresourcesinc.com or the Gate- way Resources Inc. page on Facebook. A n opportunity to contribute to the community, learn new things, find meaning and purpose, and take pride in achievements — they're all ingredients for a happy, fulfilled life.
