Maxime Renaud Above: A trio of planes show off their formation during a 2009 Portage Armed Forces Day flypast. Southport Aerospace reinvests revenues into the community, which puts a strong focus on commercial development. Its mission is to establish a world-class business centre balanced with lifestyle, wellness and recreation facilities.  It boasts some amenities that are usually only found in larger centres, such as a nine-hole golf course, a bowling alley and a substantial recreational centre that houses the largest selection of free weights in the area, along with a cardio room outfitted with treadmills, stationary bikes and other equipment. The gymnasium is big enough to accommodate six badminton courts, three volleyball courts or a full-size basketball court, and there's plenty of equipment for almost every sport. "Our recreation centre adds value to the physical training requirements of the student pilots," Maybury says. The community also has 188 residential units in Horizon Village, a new condo development that quickly sold out. "There's quite a diverse mix of people who take up residence here," Maybury says. "We're looking at developing more lots in the future. When you compare cost factors, you'll find the price of our residential units is very competitive." www.southport.ca >> The Portage la Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce saluted outstanding members of the business and volunteer communities at an Oct. 18 gala. Best Business Awards went to CHB Developments (outstanding small business), Portage Mutual Insurance (outstanding contribution to the community by a business), Canadian Tire store owner Allan Dillabough (outstanding contribution to the community by a business executive) and EF Moon Construction (long-term business achievement). >> On the community service front, Julia Arndt was named youth volunteer of the year, while Jean Armstrong – the recently retired executive director of the Portage and District Arts Centre — was named arts/cultural person of the year. RBC branch manager Guy Moffat, who serves on many local boards, was named citizen of the year. MBiz November 2012 33
