In Canada… Gay and bisexual men cannot donate blood if they have had sex with another man within ONE YEAR. HIV also can be caught or passed on through heterosexual sex, yet the same rule is not applied to heterosexual people. All blood donations are tested for HIV. Current tests for HIV are very sensitive and do not support a waiting period of one year after sex. Many people think this blood ban discriminates against gay and bisexual men who just want to help others by giving blood. Our Own Health Centre is a Winnipeg Family Medicine clinic for everybody but with specialized services for gay and bisexual men. We also will be offering free on-the-spot HIV testing at Pride. www.ourownhealth.ca 204 - 691 - 1600 Our Own Health Centre joins the 2018 SexNow Survey team to look at how this policy might be changed.
