GOING THE DISTANCE

Better equipment, bigger athletes behind longer drives, experts say By Todd Lewys

Of late, much has been made about how far Tour players are hitting the golf ball. Rightly so. As of mid-April, no fewer than 49 players were averaging 300 yards off the tee – or further – on the PGA Tour. With an average of 318 yards per drive, second- year PGA tour member Trey Mullinax was leading the way going into the second half of April. The top five was rounded out by Tony Finau (317.6 yards), Luke List (315.8), two-time winner Bubba Watson (314.8) and Ryan Palmer (313). To put things into perspective, if you average 290 yards per drive on the PGA Tour in 2018, you sit tied for 157th in driving distance rankings (hello Jonathan Byrd and 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell). That’s not a short hit. Little wonder golf’s governing bodies – the USGA and R&A – are concerned and have been lobbying for golf ball manufacturers to roll back the distance a golf ball can travel. Question is, is this incredible distance attributable to the golf ball alone, or is it the result of several factors coming together to generate such amazing distance? Garth Goodbrandson, Golf Manitoba’s director of athletic development, says the booming drives can be attributed to the latter. “Today’s players are bigger, fitter, stronger, plus I

believe they’re better athletes,” he says. “At the same time, technology and teaching has also gotten better. Everything has gotten better, and has combined so that today’s players hit the ball incredible distances. There’s no doubt the ball is a factor – it’s (traveling) a lot longer than it was years ago – but it’s not the only reason for the big increase in distance.” Golf Canada national men’s coach Derek Ingram, who spends time out on various tours working with Canada’s young touring pros, agrees with his former U of M golf team coaching partner. “The ball is fine. Course conditions are out of hand on tour, they’re so firm and perfect,” he says. “Players are also in great shape, and the equipment they use is crazy good.” Then, there’s the science behind the game. “Manufacturers are able to fine tune it (ball, equipment) exactly for your swing, especially on Tour,” adds Ingram. “The result is that players sometimes get 40 yards or more of roll.” In Ingram’s opinion, just one simple step needs to be taken to curb distance. “They shouldn’t roll the ball back – just grow the rough way higher (to penalize errant drives). And I would say don’t allow it to get any longer going forward, but don’t roll it back. The average player is really not hitting it that much farther at all.” Goodbrandson concurs.

“I think they (USGA, R&A) need to accept it (the significant increase in distance),” he says. “It’s the same with every sport – the athletes have gotten bigger, stronger, are in better shape and the technology behind equipment and training has gotten so much better. If the golf ball helps the average player enjoy the game more, that’s great.” As for a rules official’s perspective, longtime Golf Manitoba rules official Don MacDonald says golf’s governing bodies are getting their knickers in a knot for no good reason. “My own view is that they shouldn’t restrict distance,” he says. “It hasn’t had a significant impact on scoring. I think it’s good for the game that the same rules apply to touring professionals and all other golfers.” It all comes down to the enjoyment of the game, concludes Goodbrandson. “People enjoy how far the pros hit the ball on TV, and even enjoy it more when they watch them in person,” he says. “It’s important to remember that you still have to hit it straight in order to score well. The top players do that, and you’ve got to appreciate their athleticism, and how good they are. And if the golf ball helps the average player enjoy the game more, that’s a good thing.”

MANITOBA DUO HEADING TO SPECIAL OLYMPICS SUMMER GAMES

By Mark Halsall

Manitoba will send two golfers to the upcoming Special Olympics Canada 2018 Summer Games in Antigonish, N.S.

Winkler’s Peter Thiessen and Matthew Watters of Winnipeg qualified for the event by finishing first and second respectively at the Special Olympics Manitoba Summer Games in Brandon last year. Trudy Adamson, a volunteer coach with Special Olympians for nearly 30 years who resides in Minnedosa, will be coaching Watters and Thiessen in Nova Scotia. “They both really wanted to go, so they were quite happy when they found out that they had qualified,” Adamson says. “I can’t wait,” says Thiessen, who turns 47 in June. He’s been golfing for about 12 years and plays in a men’s league at the Winkler Centennial Golf Course. Peter Klassen is Thiessen’s caregiver and also his golfing partner in the men’s league. “He’s very excited about going to the summer games. He talks to everybody about it,” says Klassen, who’ll be caddying for Thiessen at the games, to be held July 31 to Aug. 4. Thiessen hasn’t competed in a Special Olympics Canada Summer Games before, but he did take part in the 2013 Special Olympics North American Golf Invitational Tournament in New Jersey and came away a winner. “I won a gold medal there — that was awesome. I had a lot of fun,” recalls Thiessen, who says he watches a lot of golf on television and is a big Tiger Woods fan. Like Thiessen, Watters is looking forward to participating in his first Special Olympics Canada Summer Games: “It will be fun.” In 2012, Watters took part in a Special Olympics national golf tournament in Hamilton and last year he was among the competitors at the 2017 Special Olympics North American Golf Invitational Tournament, held near Seattle, Wash. The 29-year-old has been golfing ever since he was eight, when he started tagging along with his dad to the

driving range with a set of cut-down clubs. He’s been golfing with the Manitoba Special Olympics program for many years and also plays regularly with his father at Players Golf Course in Winnipeg. “We have a good time,” says Watters, about golfing with his dad Bill. “What I like about golf is hitting the ball far and straight. It makes me feel good.” To prepare for the upcoming games, Watters and Thiessen are involved in conditioning and strength training programs. They, along with several other Special Olympians, have also been getting regular golf instruction from Winnipeg golf pro Darren McMillan at The Golf Dome over the winter. “It’s basically a way to stay involved in golf in the offseason so they don’t get too rusty,” McMillan says. “They have taken to the instruction really well. They’re both doing great, and they’re really excited for the summer.” McMillan, who’s been involved in the Manitoba Special Olympics program for the past three years, says he’s enjoyed the opportunity to get to know Thiessen better in recent months. “He’s a great guy who loves the game,” MacMillan says. “He’s very outgoing and personable, and I’ve been very impressed with how he hits the golf ball as well.” McMillan has known Watters for much longer. “Matthew was just a young guy coming out to the driving range when I got to know him and his family. He has taken lessons from me over the years, and he’s actually worked for me on a couple of different occasions at different golf courses where I’ve worked,” McMillan says. “I’ve been so impressed with him over the years with how much he has improved, and how much his interest in the game has increased,” he adds. “Matthew is incredibly steady. He just does his thing — it doesn’t

matter if it’s a tournament or if he’s just out playing with his dad, he plays the same way every game.” McMillan says he’s honoured that Watters picked him to be his caddy for the upcoming games. “His dad asked if I would be interested and willing, and I jumped all over it. It’s going to be a great experience with Matthew,” he says. “I just like spending time with the guy.”

Kramer Hickox earned his first Mackenzie Tour victory at last year’s Players Cup. This year’s event will be held at Southwood Golf & Country Club in August.

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC 25 minutes north of Winnipeg on highway 7

More than 25 years after the Players Cup was last played in the city’s south end, it’s coming back to Southwood Golf & Country Club.

204-886-4653 teulongc.com

This time, however, the event will have a much different look and feel. First, it will run by the Mackenzie Tour, an arm of the PGA Tour; when the tournament was last held at Southwood in 1990, it was a Canadian Tour event known as the Xerox Manitoba Open. Second, the event will he held further south in St. Norbert, Southwood’s new home, a muscular links-style design by renowned Canadian golf course architect Thomas McBroom. Instead of a traditional 6,200-yard layout, the new course will be well over 7,000 yards in length, requiring players to use their imagination and every club in their bag to successfully navigate brisk breezes and Southwood’s trademark fescue rough. Finally, because the Mackenzie Tour is a feeder tour for the Web.com Tour – and, hence, PGA Tour – golf’s future stars are going to be on display on a golf course that will bring out the best in their games. Needless to say, tournament organizers can’t wait for the event to get underway. “We’re extremely excited,” says Players Cup executive director Adam Boge, noting the event will be held Aug. 13 to 16. “First of all, because it’s located in the city’s south end, the golf course is in a fantastic location. It’s very accessible, and there’ll be lots of parking for spectators. And because it’s a links-style course, its layout will make

for good viewing for spectators.” He adds that the mid-August date should also make for better attendance – and an immaculate golf course. “In previous years, the tournament was held on the July weekend, which made it challenging to get spectators to come out. The other benefit of holding the tournament later in the summer is that the course will be in great condition. It will be fast and pristine, just what the players are looking for.” Southwood’s general manager, Jeff Scott, says that everyone associated with the club is ready to stage a first- class event. “We’re all very excited about hosting the Players Cup,” he says. “Because we’ve hosted three national events over the past five years, we’ve gained valuable experience in running tournaments, and have developed a solid volunteer base. All that experience is going to help us put on a great event.” Then there’s the course itself, which was designed to host elite-level tournaments. “First of all, we have a word-class practice facility that I think the pros are really going to enjoy. There will be plenty of room for everyone to warm up (the double-ended range is 500 yards long with ultra-wide hitting areas at each end), and they’ll always be hitting off grass,” Scott says. “It’s a real plus.” Once players hit the course, they’ll need to be loose, as the golf course

figures to be well over 7,000 yards long. “There’s the capability to go past 7,400 yards with the golf course. While it might not be quite that long, you can rest assured it will be set up to challenge the players. And if the wind blows (as it almost always does at Southwood), the players will really be tested.” That said, the players will have the skill to cope with the stiff test that Southwood is bound to present, Boge says. “These guys are the real deal – many of the players that will be playing here in August are future PGA Tour players. Last year’s Players Cup champion, Kramer Hickox, played some events on the PGA Tour last year, and finished Top 25. PGA Tour players such as Adam Hadwin, Tony Finau and Corey Conners (who contended in Mexico on the PGA Tour earlier this year) have also played here. The fans are going to see some great golf.” Hopefully, many of those fans will be young ones, Boge adds. “This event represents a great chance for juniors to come out and watch some world-class golf. This year, proceeds from the tournament will go to the Junior Golf Mentorship Foundation. Our goal at the beginning of next year is to use the money raised from the tournament to get kids out to learn the game at no charge. Hopefully, we can get more kids playing golf and who knows, maybe we can develop some future PGA Tour players along the way.”

FALCON LAKE UNDERGOES MAJOR MAKEOVER By Mark Halsall

A favourite golf spot for Manitobans will have even more to offer visitors this year.

The old pro shop and restaurant buildings at Falcon Lake Golf Course have been torn down to make way for a brand-new clubhouse facility which will be completed this summer. The scenic 7,000-yard, 18-hole course in Whiteshell Provincial Park was built back in 1957. Construction work on the new clubhouse that includes a pro shop and restaurant started last December and is slated to finish by July 1. Harry Brotchie is the president of Winnipeg’s Lakeland Golf Management Inc., the parent company of Lakeland Golf Developments Inc. which runs the Falcon Lake Golf Course. It took over the operation of the golf course last year when Brotchie’s business entered into a 21-year lease agreement with the province. “I think it was pretty obvious to everyone that the

clubhouse needed capital investment,” says Brotchie. The new 5,000-square-foot building is being built on the site of the old clubhouse. The pro shop is located on one end and the restaurant and outdoor patio is on the other end facing the putting green. Number TEN Architectural Group designed the new clubhouse, and Bockstael Construction Ltd. Is the general contractor on the project. The aging parking lot at Falcon Lake Golf Course is also being redone and will have a slightly larger capacity when finished. Maple Leaf Construction Ltd. is performing this work. Once the course opens this spring, a temporary structure will house the pro shop and there’ll be limited food and beverage services available for guests while the new clubhouse and landscaping around it is completed.

Brotchie says construction has been going well and there’s a good chance the new facility could be fully operational before July 1. Brotchie believes the improvements will enhance the course’s reputation as a premier golf destination. Located just off the Trans-Canada Highway not far from the Manitoba-Ontario border, the course is just over an hour’s drive from Winnipeg’s Perimeter Highway and about a 45-minute drive from Kenora on Lake of the Woods. It’s just outside the busy resort community of Falcon Lake and is set in rugged Canadian Shield country with thick forests lining its picturesque fairways. “It’s located in a provincial park, and you probably couldn’t get a nicer piece of property,” Brotchie says. “It’s always in good condition [and] in my opinion, it could be argued that it’s the best course in the province.”

Falcon Lake Golf Course is situated in prime cottage country and does the lion’s share of its business in July and August. The course is set to host a pair of Golf Manitoba championship events this summer, the Women’s Amateur Championship and the Men’s Mid- Amateur Championship, both slated for July 3 to 5. Falcon Lake may be a championship-calibre course, but it’s also known for providing a great golf experience for players of every ability and skill level. “One of the attractions is that for those who want a challenge, it probably provides everything that they want,” Brotchie says. “From the white tees, it’s also a very comfortable golf course for the average recreational golfer. It’s not too narrow, so you can play it at whatever length you like.” Falcon Lake is the newest addition to the slate of golf

courses operated by the Winnipeg-based Lakeland Group of Companies. Others include Winnipeg’s Tuxedo Golf Course and Harbour View Golf Course, Hecla Golf Course on Lake Winnipeg, and Links at the Lake in Gimli (which Lakeland owns). It also operates four golf courses in Saskatchewan. Brotchie is confident the company’s investment in facility upgrades to Falcon Lake Golf Course will pay off in the coming years. “We see good potential for growth. We had a good year last year and we see nothing but upside in rounds played, which is a little bit unusual in the golf market these days” he says. “We are certainly budgeting growth in the next two, three, four years.”

Aaron Cockerill’s game has improved each year and he’ll be looking for a breakthrough on this year’s Mackenzie Tour.

Entering his third full season on the Mackenzie Tour, Aaron Cockerill believes he’s poised for a breakthrough.

Located in Kenora Ontario 18 hole championship golf course Licenced Restaurant and lounge KENORA Golf & Country Club

“My game has gotten a little bit better each year I’ve been out here,” he says during a phone call from Phoenix, where he’s been working on his game in preparation for the Mackenzie Tour’s 2018 season. “I recently started working with (Golf Canada national men’s coach) Derek Ingram on some small changes, and I’m starting to get the hang of them. My game’s pretty good. I can hardly wait for the season to start.” A late bloomer who didn’t start playing competitive golf until age 16, Cockerill – the 2012 and 2013 Manitoba Men’s Match Play champion – has progressed steadily over his two years on the Mackenzie Tour, the first step on the path to the PGA Tour. In 2016, he finished 47th on the Tour’s Order of Merit with $14,893. In 2017, he improved to 37th on the Order of Merit with $16,572. However, the numbers don’t tell the entire story. Jumping 10 places on the Order and earning nearly $2,000 more may not seem like a ton of progress. But look closer at the stats, and you see that Cockerill’s scoring average during the 2017 Mackenzie Tour season was 69.70. Yet, that sub-70 scoring average netted 37th spot on the Order of Merit, which goes to show how competitive the Tour is. With that in mind, Cockerill is focused on working on the things that will enable him to separate himself from his talented peers this year. “I’ve really been working on improving my swing fundamentals,” says Cockerill, who’s known for his solid ball striking. “I’m trying to pick up more clubhead speed for more distance, especially off the tee. I’m also working on improving my putting inside 10 feet. Having played for two years out here, I’ve seen how close everyone is (in terms of talent). If I can gain some distance and make more putts inside 10 feet, I’m pretty confident I’ll move up the money list.” Another area he’s working on is self-belief, something a player needs to have to

make it to the game’s highest level. “It’s huge. You have to have it to make it to the top level of the game. The players who’ve put in the work, are driven and truly believe in themselves are the ones who’ve made it to the PGA Tour.” He adds that PGA Tour star Graham DeLaet is a prime example of a player who’s had unwavering self-belief. “When he was making his way up the ranks, he apparently always used to say, ‘It will be cool when I make it on the PGA Tour’ with a straight face. He truly believed he would make it, and he did. I’m trying to get those subtle differences in my head.” While Cockerill’s ultimate goal is to one day play on the PGA Tour – the Mackenzie Tour isn’t ridiculously far from that rarified air – he isn’t about to get ahead of himself. “That’s my long-term goal, but right now, I’m just trying to do the right things every day. I’m putting in eight hours a day – going to the gym, eating right, practicing and playing – and my game is improving. I’m doing all I can to get better. My short-term goal is have my strongest Mackenzie Tour

season yet.” If he accomplishes that goal, he will then be one step closer to the PGA Tour. “I’ve played a few times with (PGA Tour winners) Adam Hadwin and (Winnipeg native) Nick Taylor, and they both told me the hardest thing to do is get to the Web.com Tour,” Cockerill says. “Once you get there, you can stay there if you play well. If you keep improving, you’ll have a chance to get to the PGA Tour.” For the time being, his goals are simple. “I want to finish inside the top 20 on the Order of Merit, and then play well at qualifying school at the end of the year. I made to the final stage of qualifying school and had conditional status on the Web.com Tour (in 2016), but didn’t get into any events,” he says. “I’m really looking forward to getting the year going, and to putting in the work required to take the next step in my career.” If attitude counts, expect Cockerill to make that next step sooner rather than later.
