Brotchie says construction has been going well and there’s a good chance the new facility could be fully operational before July 1. Brotchie believes the improvements will enhance the course’s reputation as a premier golf destination. Located just off the Trans-Canada Highway not far from the Manitoba-Ontario border, the course is just over an hour’s drive from Winnipeg’s Perimeter Highway and about a 45-minute drive from Kenora on Lake of the Woods. It’s just outside the busy resort community of Falcon Lake and is set in rugged Canadian Shield country with thick forests lining its picturesque fairways. “It’s located in a provincial park, and you probably couldn’t get a nicer piece of property,” Brotchie says. “It’s always in good condition [and] in my opinion, it could be argued that it’s the best course in the province.”
Falcon Lake Golf Course is situated in prime cottage country and does the lion’s share of its business in July and August. The course is set to host a pair of Golf Manitoba championship events this summer, the Women’s Amateur Championship and the Men’s Mid- Amateur Championship, both slated for July 3 to 5. Falcon Lake may be a championship-calibre course, but it’s also known for providing a great golf experience for players of every ability and skill level. “One of the attractions is that for those who want a challenge, it probably provides everything that they want,” Brotchie says. “From the white tees, it’s also a very comfortable golf course for the average recreational golfer. It’s not too narrow, so you can play it at whatever length you like.” Falcon Lake is the newest addition to the slate of golf
courses operated by the Winnipeg-based Lakeland Group of Companies. Others include Winnipeg’s Tuxedo Golf Course and Harbour View Golf Course, Hecla Golf Course on Lake Winnipeg, and Links at the Lake in Gimli (which Lakeland owns). It also operates four golf courses in Saskatchewan. Brotchie is confident the company’s investment in facility upgrades to Falcon Lake Golf Course will pay off in the coming years. “We see good potential for growth. We had a good year last year and we see nothing but upside in rounds played, which is a little bit unusual in the golf market these days” he says. “We are certainly budgeting growth in the next two, three, four years.”
