make it to the game’s highest level. “It’s huge. You have to have it to make it to the top level of the game. The players who’ve put in the work, are driven and truly believe in themselves are the ones who’ve made it to the PGA Tour.” He adds that PGA Tour star Graham DeLaet is a prime example of a player who’s had unwavering self-belief. “When he was making his way up the ranks, he apparently always used to say, ‘It will be cool when I make it on the PGA Tour’ with a straight face. He truly believed he would make it, and he did. I’m trying to get those subtle differences in my head.” While Cockerill’s ultimate goal is to one day play on the PGA Tour – the Mackenzie Tour isn’t ridiculously far from that rarified air – he isn’t about to get ahead of himself. “That’s my long-term goal, but right now, I’m just trying to do the right things every day. I’m putting in eight hours a day – going to the gym, eating right, practicing and playing – and my game is improving. I’m doing all I can to get better. My short-term goal is have my strongest Mackenzie Tour

season yet.” If he accomplishes that goal, he will then be one step closer to the PGA Tour. “I’ve played a few times with (PGA Tour winners) Adam Hadwin and (Winnipeg native) Nick Taylor, and they both told me the hardest thing to do is get to the Web.com Tour,” Cockerill says. “Once you get there, you can stay there if you play well. If you keep improving, you’ll have a chance to get to the PGA Tour.” For the time being, his goals are simple. “I want to finish inside the top 20 on the Order of Merit, and then play well at qualifying school at the end of the year. I made to the final stage of qualifying school and had conditional status on the Web.com Tour (in 2016), but didn’t get into any events,” he says. “I’m really looking forward to getting the year going, and to putting in the work required to take the next step in my career.” If attitude counts, expect Cockerill to make that next step sooner rather than later.
