Golf Expo Makes a Triumphant Return
MAN I TOBA
Provided by The Professional Golfer’s Association
As one of the oldest professional golf associations in the world, the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of Canada is a leader in promoting and developing the game of golf. The PGA of Manitoba is proud to be an active member of the organization. Membership in the Manitoba Zone has over 135 professional active members at over 75 golf courses, reaching thousands of golfers each year. The organization is host to 12 PGA of Manitoba professional tournaments throughout the season, including the PGA of Manitoba Championship in July. A great advocate in growing the game of golf, the PGA of Manitoba has also run a youth program at Rossmere Country Club over the last three years - hosting a group of junior high and high school students, selected by their school. Moving forward, the PGA of Manitoba will launch its Junior Program this season, open to all kids ages 11-16. The PGA of Manitoba Junior League will have participants play eight rounds of golf (9 holes) in a team format. The league is designed for juniors to play the game with kids their own age at a variety of different golf courses. The league will begin on June 23 and run for eight consecutive weeks. It will be operated by PGA of Manitoba Golf Professionals Glen Sirkis (known as Stretch) and Adam Boge (known as A-Bomb). Both professionals operate junior programs across the city, assisting anyone looking to get into junior golf. More information on the PGA of Manitoba Junior League is available at www.pgaofmanitoba.com.

In all, 35 exhibitors took part in the Winnipeg Golf Expo, which was organized by the NGCOA. Show features included a presentation stage manned by golf professionals from the PGA of Manitoba, an equipment demo range hosted by Golf Town, a PGA of Manitoba retail area and The Players Cup 19th hole, where show patrons could take a load off and watch some PGA Tour golf on the big screen. Exhibitors not only included local golf courses, but courses and resorts from south of the border such as the Explore Minnesota Golf Alliance, Minnesota Golf Trilogy, the Brainerd (Minnesota) Golf Trail, Madden’s on Gull Lake and Medora North Dakota’s Bully Pulpit Golf Course. Kathy Solga, golf shop manager at Bully Pulpit, said travelling north for the expo was well worth the trip. “We’ve been well-received here,” she said. “It’s been a very busy show for us, and everyone has been so welcoming. We’ve had a great time sharing what we have at Bully Pulpit with golfers here.” Breezy Point Resort’s director of golf, Mark Johnson, echoed Solga’s sentiments. “It’s provided us with a wonderful opportunity to spread awareness of all the great golf that’s only hours away in Minnesota,” he said. “It’s been a very friendly, well-run show, and we’ll certainly be back next year.” Likewise, Manitoba-based golf courses also benefitted from attending the expo.
“Several exhibitors from golf courses both in the United States and Manitoba told me much the same thing - ‘many of the people at the show hadn’t heard of our golf course, but said now that they have, they will definitely come out to play it’,”said O’Donovan. Manitoba-based courses at the show included Pinawa Golf and Country Club, Poplar Ridge Golf Course, Bel Acres Golf and Country Club, Breezy Bend Golf Course, Minnedosa Golf and Country Club, Granite Hills Golf Course, Southwood Golf and Country Club and Shilo Country Club. “As time goes on, we plan to grow it into a more dynamic event that will benefit everyone even more.” The overall idea, added O’Donovan, is to build an event that attains the balance required to simultaneously meet the needs of consumers and exhibitors. “We made great strides this year, and there are lots of ideas on how to make the expo better. Our task is now to review those ideas and incorporate some of them to build the show and move forward so that we can give consumers what they’re looking for while providing exhibitors with the value they desire,” he said. “Our hope is that 2014 marks the start of an industry-driven, consumer-focused golf expo that people will make a spot for on their calendar and make a point of attending every March to kick of the golf season.”
It turns out that a year’s absence makes the heart grow fonder. A golfer’s heart, that is. Put on the shelf in 2013 due to a transition in staffing, the Winnipeg Golf Expo returned to Red River Exhibition Park on the weekend of March 29 to 30. The reception was very enthusiastic, said the National Golf Course Owners Association’s (NGCOA) regional director, Prairie Chapter, Kevin O’Donovan. “We were very pleased with how it went,” he said. “The reaction from consumers was very positive. Their support was excellent, as was the support from expo sponsors. It’s good to be back on the map after a one-year hiatus.” He added that one of the most encouraging parts of the 2014 event was an across-the- board spirit of cooperation. “It’s quite likely this is the first time the whole golf community in Manitoba was in the same room all at one time,” said O’Donovan. “That was great to see – organizations like the Manitoba Golf Superintendents Association, Golf Manitoba and the PGA of Manitoba – sharing space with golf courses from across Manitoba, as well as Minnesota and North Dakota. Best of all, they were supported by a good cross-section of major golf equipment manufacturers. That high level of consumer response and exhibitor enthusiasm makes it an event we can definitely build on moving forward.”

B ienvenue! Welcome to two affiliated golf facilities, located just 30 min- utes apart, near the perimeter highway in south St.Vital. The first, to work on your game, practice, and take lessons, is the St.Vital Golf Centre, located at 35 Melnick road at the perimeter. The second – the Maplewood Golf Club – is just a short drive south to St.Pierre-Jolys, and is one of Manitoba’s most scenic and fun courses to play. Both courses are managed and oper- ated by PGA of Can- ada golf professional Barry Gibson. Barry has over 25 years of experience, with an extensive back- ground in teaching and club fitting, and a distinct focus on customer service. The St. Vital Golf Centre features Win- nipeg’s largest, top-conditioned all-grass practice tees, along with practice putting and chipping areas. The centre is home to McGibby’s Golf, a full service golf shop with the latest in equipment, club fitting technol- ogy and digital video swing analysis. McGibby’s is an authorized Ping n’ Flight fitting centre. This operates using Ping’s industry-leading custom fitting software, backed by radar-based Flight Scope technology, to help with both fitting and teaching.
Along with complete custom club fitting, a full scope of lessons are available, includ- ing private lessons, group lessons, begin- ner clinics, and junior programs. Up highway 59 from the centre, Maple- wood Golf Course, formerly the old Rat River course, has undergone extensive remodeling and improvements. The course now boasts complete flood protection, drainage, and fairway and green renova-
tions. It also features a modernized course lay- out, which takes full ad- vantage of the unique rolling river basin to- pography. The Rat River winds through the layout, com- ing into play on several

holes. Players will experience small undu- lating elevated greens, rolling fairways, and strategic tee shots and approaches. This results in a course that provides a scenic, fun challenge for all skill levels. Maplewood Golf Club is fully open for public play, tournaments and leagues and has a popular senior’s league on Wednesdays. The St. Vital Golf Centre and the Maple- wood Golf Club combine to offer a unique experience for Manitoba golfers – both a great place to practice, and a great place to play.

Golf is a great opportunity for kids to get active and have fun. It also places them in an environment that teaches them how to get along with others, while being intro-

is no charge for the acad- emy,” said Robinson. Rona sponsors the full event for all participants. To carry the opportunity one step further, the program has also set aside 40 spots this season for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg and
Boys and Girls Clubs of Winnipeg. Registration requires only a phone call to Bridges (204-735-3000). Lessons will then be scheduled to fall on any two of the first three Saturdays in June. Robinson says the program and its spon- sor are inspired by one simple concept. “All kids should have a chance at golf.”
Larry Robinson, director of golf at Bridg- es, has a passion for the program, because it provides young players from all back- grounds with an easy introduction to the game. The participants don’t even need to come with gear. “We provide everything,” said Robinson.

08 • MANITOBA GOLF GUIDE 2014
Way back in 2005, the town of Niverville was to be the site of a new golf course – The Links at Crow Wing. However – for a variety of reasons, the project stalled. That is, until two summers ago. Then, a group called Links International, headed up by President Jeremy Lumgair, took control of the golf course. They enlisted one of Canada’s most notable golf architects to fill in the blank slate that was supposed to be The Links at Crow Wing. Today, Lumgair has teamed with noted golf course architect Graham Cooke to resurrect the course, which has fittingly taken on a new name: Old Drovers Run. “We began the process of bringing back the course two years ago this April,” said Lumgair, who also holds the title of director of golf operations at Old Drovers Run. “The course had fallen into disrepair after four years, so it’s taken us two years to re-establish what was there. Right now, we’re moving forward 100 per cent. Most of the old holes have been fixed, so we’re now moving on to the back nine. We hope to have the first nine holes in play by mid-to-late June.” He added that the quality of the weather will determine if that target is hit. “To be honest, the course is still in the grow-in stage in many areas, so there are some bare patches,” he said. “That said, if all goes well – good weather is crucial – we should be done construction within the next two-and-a-half to three months. We just need the right weather conditions for the course to blossom.” For his part, Cooke said he’s excited about the potential of Old Drovers Run. “I toured the course with Jeremy last summer and liked what I saw. It’s a links-style course all the way that’s reminiscent of Prestwick and St. Andrews,” said Cooke, who’s not only a top-rate golf course architect,
but a much-decorated amateur player. “I love the site – it’s a quiet property that allowed us to build a course into it, much like a course you’d see in the Old Country overseas. It has the potential to be the best links course in Canada.” Lumgair said that assessment is a fair one. “It really is an excellent site with good bones for a links-style course,” he said. “Graham was really excited when he saw what we had, that it really had a true links flavour to it.” Cooke said it just took a little earth moving to get the site where to it needed to be. “Actually, we moved a lot of earth – we did that to put more power into the site in four or five areas. The result was a great mix of holes. There are stretches of strong holes, then the course settles down. Greens are set into mound complexes, as well as open prairie, while the fairways are generous, and green fronts are open so you can run or bump your approach in,” he said. “There are no weak holes; each hole has its own character. Best of all, you won’t have to go to Scotland to enjoy some true links-style golf.” As for the course make-up, Lumgair said there will be four to five tee boxes to play from, with the course playing anywhere from 5,180 yards to 7,700 yards or better. “It’s going to be a course that everyone can play,” he said, adding that the course will feature about 160 bunkers. “It looks tight from the tees, but the landing areas are actually quite wide. Once the course dries out and we get some good growth, we’ll open nine holes for play. With its fescue, grass-walled bunkers and natural areas between holes, it’s going to be a good test of links golf, and it will continue to look even better as it matures.”

Discover Golf… In South East Manitoba
When it comes to playing good golf, it’s essential to grip the club properly. Why? The answer is simple. A good grip will increase your chances of success, while a poor grip will make it difficult to be consistent and reach your full potential as a golfer. Many mid- to-high handicap players would play much better golf if they only took the time to develop a sound grip. In an ideal world, a golfer would learn to grip a golf club properly from a young age. In many cases, to assist themselves in hitting the ball further, young golfers tend to have a strong grip starting out, with three knuckles showing on their left (top) hand and the handle of the golf club placed well into their fingers, if they’re right-handed. Others start with a weak grip, with less than two knuckles showing on the left hand, and the handle of the club in their palm. The best grip is a neutral one, with two or two-and-a-half knuckles showing on the top hand. While many golfers might play well with a strong or weak grip when they’re young, that faulty grip can cause problems as they get older. Misses will hook or slice further into trouble because they’re hitting the ball longer. The remedy for this inconsistency is a grip change. While it sounds simple enough to do, it really isn’t. After years of playing with an overly strong or weak grip, that grip has become ingrained. As a result, making a grip change is easier said than done. Even though a golfer knows their grip is the source of their annoying inconsistency, they make excuses about changing; the main one being that the grip is just comfortable, making change impossible. Or, after taking a lesson and being shown how to grip the club properly, they go back to their old grip because they get discouraged after hitting a ton of bad shots. This is where discipline is required. Whenever you make a swing change, you’re guaranteed to hit bad shots – in this case, because the new grip feels uncomfortable. The reality is that change requires commitment. If you know your old grip was incorrect and the new grip your PGA Manitoba golf professional showed you is correct, you need to stick with it. Eventually, you’ll become comfortable with it, and will start to hit better shots. By the same token, you may want to undertake a grip change over the winter if your grip is too strong. It’s actually easier to change from a weak grip to a neutral grip than it is to change from a strong grip to a neutral grip. So if you decide to change your grip from strong to neutral, take lessons over the winter when you’re not worried about results. The bottom line about the grip is this - the better your grip, the better your chances are of hitting quality golf shots. Take the time to develop a sound grip, and you’re guaranteed to play more consistent golf.

clinics for juniors and members, Kurceba aims to show that with good development of the fundamental skills, a golfer can make almost any shot. Kurceba also credits the fun atmosphere at Falcon with the relaxed cottage-country mindset of those who populate the course all summer. He anticipates another good season from May to October this year, with many opportunities to learn on the course and enjoy an entertaining type of game. “We have our men’s night and ladies’ nights together on Thursdays, so the clubhouse is rocking by 9:00 at night after everyone has had a good time out playing,” says Kurceba. “The Falcon Ladies Open is also back, on the first Saturday of June, with about 95 ladies coming in from all parts of Manitoba to play.” Many other staple events, including junior nights and the Black Sparrow, will return this season. Plus, a brand new event will attract golfers of all levels to the course with a special community focus. “We’re planning to run a big event on the third Thursday in August, to support select charities,” says Kurceba. The new event will be a scramble, open to single players and teams of four. Information will be available by contacting the golf shop. As unique as the golf experience is at Falcon Lake, the facility offers so much more to entertain visitors of all ages and interests. Its sports facility boasts six tennis courts, lawn bowles, horseshoes, and a mini putt course. There’s also a driving range and putting greens on site, and the course’s restaurant where everyone can enjoy basking in the laid-back atmosphere and fresh air on the outdoor patio. More information on everything Falcon Lake Golf Course has to offer this season, including special events, is available by contacting the course (204-349-2554, www. falconlakegolfcourse.com).
East of Winnipeg, nestled amongst the tall trees and abundant wildlife of the Whiteshell Provincial Park, is a golfing experience unlike any other. The course is both immaculate and wild, the staff is one-of-a-kind, and the game is never dull. Long-touted as the premier public course in Manitoba, and one of the top in Canada, Falcon Lake Golf Course has a reputation that’s been built on the foundation of timeless design. The facility took form in 1958 under the guidance of Norman Woods, renowned golf architect, who took care of every detail to ensure that even the vegetation grew in complement with the course. The forest-lined track is also famous for being a test of a player’s ability. The holes can be challenging, with Falcon Creek winding through the playable landscape, and when played from the back tees, it’s a 7000 yard game. Even more engaging than the setting and design is an inviting spirit of entertainment and all-consuming fun. The kind of atmosphere that can only come from people who truly love – and live – the game. Course pro Sandy Kurceba, known by many as the Bald Falcon, brings the spirit alive in his work at Falcon. World-renowned for both his professional game and his performances as a trick shot artist, Kurceba considers himself an entertainer first, and a golf pro second. “I get the most laughs when I flip the putter over my shoulder like a sand wedge to get out of a bunker,” Kurceba says. He surprises onlookers with other tricks, like swinging a seven-foot driver, hitting the ball with a rubber- hose shaft, and using a two headed iron or a two headed driver. What sets the Falcon pro apart from other trick shot artists is that he gives his performances a “Happy Gilmore” twist, wearing skates and Adam Sandler-like gear while performing. It’s also a tip-of-the-hat to his early career in professional hockey, when he played for the Greensboro Generals in North Carolina. Integrating his various trick shots into

the wide range of lodging options, great food (in four distinctly different restaurants) and, of course, our wonderful location on the shores of crystal clear Pelican Lake.” Johnson said the goal at Breezy Point is the same each and every year. “We want to provide you with the best possible experience from the time you arrive until the time you leave. We’ll customize your stay and play package, which means we’ll make all the calls to arrange your tee times, exactly at the time you want, and at the course you want to play, whether it’s the Deacon’s Lodge course (which was designed by Arnold Palmer), or our Traditional or Whitebirch courses,” he said. “And if you enjoy fishing, boating, swimming or biking, we’ve got that, too.” The other half of the Brainerd Golf Trail is Cragun’s Resort & Hotel on Gull Lake, which offers not only incredible lakeside lodgings, but great golf. Designed by golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., the Dutch Legacy – a 6,872-yard, par-72 layout - and Bobby’s Legacy, a 6,807-yard, par-72 design – inhabit a 1,000-acre Audubon Signature Sanctuary that’s surrounded by towering trees and spectacular lake views. Last but not least is Giants Ridge in Biwabik, Minnesota, about a six hour drive from Winnipeg. Its two courses, The Legend and The Quarry, offer different personalities. Playing from 5,084 yards to 6,930 yards, The Legend winds through trees, plays alongside or over water, and requires that approach shots avoid well-placed greenside bunkers. The Quarry, at 7,201 yards from its back tees, is the brawnier of the two courses, demanding a well-balanced blend of power and precision to shoot a good score. However, like The Legend, The Quarry offers four different tee boxes, making it user-friendly for every level of golfer. Each of these eight courses is an easy drive from Manitoba. There may be no easier way to experience a great American golf destination than by visiting Bully Pulpit Golf Course, the Brainerd Golf Trail (Breezy Point, Cragun’s) or Giants Ridge Golf & Ski Resort.
When golfers in Manitoba think about golf in the United States, they tend to think about courses in Arizona, Florida, California and other warm weather states. While that’s entirely understandable, it may be time to think of other courses south of the border that can be accessed without spending $500 or more on airfare. After all, courses in Minnesota and North Dakota are anywhere from a three to six-hour drive away. And, make no mistake about it; like their counterparts further south, the courses are genuine golfing meccas. “We’re about four-and-a-half hours from Fargo,” said Kathy Solga, golf shop manager for Bully Pulpit Golf Course, which is located in Medora, North Dakota. “The golf course (which is ranked as one of America’s top-100 public courses) is in an area that’s basically the gateway to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It’s a unique golf course, to say the least.” Her co-worker at Bully Pulpit, head golf professional Casey Moen, agreed. “It’s a ruggedly beautiful course that’s really like no other you may have played before,” he said. “It’s surrounded by the bluffs of the Badlands, featuring undulating terrain that winds through meadows, woodlands and along the Little Missouri River. One of the best things about the course is that it’s designed for every level of player. There are five tees – the forward tees play 4,750 yards, while the course is 7,166 yards from the tips. It’s a course everyone can enjoy, and we offer great stay and play packages.” Meanwhile, in Minnesota, the Brainerd Golf Trail is a five-and-a-half to six-hour drive from Winnipeg – a drive that features two resorts and eight golf courses, including a nine-hole layout. “The drive from Winnipeg is easy and well worthwhile,” said Mark C. Johnson, director of golf at Breezy Point Resort, which is home to three golf courses including Deacon’s Lodge, considered the premiere championship course in the Brainerd Lakes area. “Not only is the golf exceptional, but so is
