On and off the course, The Players Cup’s mandate is to provide a platform for people to learn how to win.

Mackenzie Hughes, Corey Conners) have gone on to the Web.com Tour and PGA Tour. Our 2017 champion, Kramer Hickok, is now playing on the PGA Tour, and our 2018 champion, Tyler McCum - ber, is currently 12th on the Web.com’s money list. He’s in position to graduate to the PGA Tour at season’s end.” In short, golf fans should mark Aug. 15 to 19 on their calendars. “It’s going to be a great week that will celebrate Southwood’s 100th anniver- sary, Manitoba’s proud golfing past and the abilities of future PGA Tour stars,” Boge says. “We’ll also be supporting junior golf, too. Donations will be taken for the Junior Golf Mentorship Founda- tion in place of admission; every dona- tion will really be appreciated.” The support of Players Cup founding partners – the Johnston Group, James Richardson & Sons Ltd. and Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries – along with plati- num partners Quintex, Princess Auto and Langreen Construction – is also greatly appreciated. “We couldn’t put the tournament on without them,” Boge adds. “Without our tournament partners and volunteers – we will need 400 volunteers again this year – the event doesn’t happen.” For more information on the 2019 Players Cup – which is one of the premiere events on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada –

“We call it a celebration tent,” Boge says. “It will hold trophies, artifacts, and will pay tribute to past winners of the Players Cup and the Manitoba Open. We’ll be celebrating golf in Manitoba – it’s past, present, and future.” That future – Manitoba’s junior golfers – will also be on display, he adds. “We’ll be supporting initiatives that are designed to grow the game across the province. Those initiatives include the Junior Golf Mentorship Foundation and the Play Through Foundation, which benefits inner-city children’s initiatives in Winnipeg through our primary chari- table partners. Over $500,000 has been given back to local charities since 2010 because of our great partners.” Boge notes that there will be plenty more on the go during tournament week. “A secondary pro-am has been added at Elmhurst Golf & Country Club for Tuesday – it will be open to the first 28 teams. We will also be putting up pri- vate hospitality tents for corporations and businesses to enjoy. The goal is to engage spectators as much as possi- ble. We believe the tents will really add to the tournament atmosphere.” With plenty of spectators fanning out across the tournament-friendly course – and future PGA Tour stars making birdies by the bushel – the atmosphere promises to be electric. “The quality of play will be very compa- rable to what you see on the Web.com Tour and PGA Tour,” Boge says. “Many players that have competed in the Play- ers Cup (Steve Stricker, Tony Finau,

This year, the Players Cup will not only continue its drive to help people suc- ceed – from PGA Tour hopefuls to ju- nior golfers and worthy charities – but it will also be celebrating Manitoba’s rich golf history. That history will be front-and-centre with the tournament host, Southwood Golf & Country Club, celebrating its 100th anniversary, says Players Cup executive director Adam Boge. “Not only will people be able to come out and watch future PGA Tour players play some great golf at a world-class venue, but they will also be able to gain an appreciation of the province’s great golfing history,” he says. “The Players Cup – which was formerly the Manitoba Open, then MTS Classic, then Free Press Manitoba Classic – is one of the oldest golf tournaments in North America.” Best of all, tournament patrons will be able to watch the birdies fly and touch that history for free, Boge adds. “Because we really want people to come out to experience the event and celebrate Southwood’s 100th anniver- sary and Manitoba’s deep golf roots, admission to the tournament will be free of charge. All you need to do is go to the Players Cup website (playerscup. golf) to claim your ticket. There’s plenty of parking on-site, and it’s also free.” Once at the course, tournament patrons will be greeted by quite a sight: flags fly - ing, Southwood’s muscular, links-style course spreading out across the hori- zon – and a pavilion with a large tent holding artifacts that will pay homage to the province’s proud golfing past.

As much as we think we like change, the reality is that we are all creatures of habit. Take the rules of golf, for example. Back in 2012, golf’s governing bodies – the United States Golf Association (USGA) and Royal & Ancient Club of St. An- drews (R & A) – embarked upon the unenviable task of revising the rules with the goal of making them more user-friendly and less punitive. Finally, after seven years of painstaking work, the new rules were rolled out in January of this year. The roll-out – much to the horror of the USGA and R & A – was anything but seamless. Although many of the changes appeared straightforward – key changes in- cluded dropping from knee height instead of shoulder height, being permitted to leave the flagstick in while putting on the green and reducing search time for a lost ball from three to five minutes – they turned out to be anything but.

05 GOLF GUIDE 2019 M A N I T O B A

“It’s a big change in process after doing things one way for about 35 years,” he says. “The rule changes have been a big adjustment for both players and referees.” Ladobruk just referenced another change to the rules. Turns out, it will no longer be rules officials, but referees, that preside over rulings at tournaments. Longtime Golf Manitoba rules official, er, referee, Don MacDonald, says that he and other Golf Manitoba officials have been kept busy attending seminars put on by Golf Canada to learn the myriad rule changes. In turn, Golf Manitoba has been active in putting on rules seminars since the start of the year. Those seminars will carry over into the spring and beyond to ensure everyone gets a good handle on the changes. “We’re working with clubs to draft changes to local rules,” MacDonald says. “There have been terminology changes that have changed definitions. Just a couple of ex - amples are ‘temporary water’ instead of ‘casual water,’ and ‘through the green’ now being ‘the general area.’ Those are just two of many changes.” Ladobruk says he expects it will take a while for people to wrap their heads

around all the changes. “I think the growing pains that we’ve seen will continue through the entire 2019 sea- son. As I said earlier, it’s a big change in process. I think the biggest challenge will be competitive players having confidence in making the right rules decision. I expect that our referees will be very busy.” That said, Golf Manitoba’s director of competitions Lisa Anderson believes her referees are prepped and ready to go. “I’m really confident that they will rise to the challenge. They’ve put in tons of time on it (learning the new rules), so the players won’t have to worry about getting proper rulings,” she says. MacDonald says that while the odd is- sue is inevitable, it’s important to look at the bigger picture as it pertains to the new rules. “We need to focus on the long-term bene- fits, not the short-term transition,” he says. “We shouldn’t get too fussed about a year of transition. Short-term, there are going to be rough spots. In the long-term, I be- lieve the new rules will simplify and speed up the game and make it more enjoyable

The first major casualty of the rule chang - es was PGA Tour star Rickie Fowler, who was penalized one shot for dropping from shoulder height instead of knee height at the WGC Mexico Championship. Fowler grumbled about the penalty, but later ac- knowledged that old habits die hard. Then, at the 2019 Players Championship in March, last year’s Players champion Webb Simpson – who was walking to his ball just off the green to play it with his putter – had the putter catch in his shirt and inadvertently hit the ball. He was subsequently penalized for caus- ing his ball to move. According to the rules, Simpson’s ball was at rest, and the incident resulted in a one stroke penalty. If that wasn’t bad enough, fellow player Adam Schenk was penalized two strokes at The Players for having his caddie stand behind him after he took his stance. The same penalty was also levied on Denny McCarthy earlier in the year at the Waste Management Phoenix Open for the align- ment no-no. Unfortunately – at least early on – the buzz around the rules of golf wasn’t a pos- itive one. That’s entirely understandable, says Jared Ladobruk, executive director of Golf Manitoba.

Jared Ladobruk may be the new guy at Golf Manitoba, but he’s hardly a newcomer to the Manitoba golf scene. BY JIM TIMLICK

“I have this familiarity with the local golf com- munity so I knew I wouldn’t be coming in cold. I looked at it and thought it was a really good fit for me. And just the opportunity to get in - volved again with the game that has given me so much and something I’ve been passionate about for a very long time…it all just added up.” Ladobruk says the experience he gained competing as an amateur and working as a pro have served him well in his role with Golf Manitoba. “That was obviously very beneficial to where I am now, having that history and understanding to know the programming that we offer and some of the events that we conduct,” he adds. Things never quite added up for Ladobruk to seriously consider a career as a touring pro, even though he admits it was something he thought about as a youngster. “When I was younger and in school I used to think it would be neat to play golf (profession- ally) but I think that dream was put to rest pretty quickly,” he says, laughing. “I certainly enjoyed the competition and I still enjoy com- peting today.” Even though Ladobruk’s own dream has been put to rest, he is excited to be part of Golf Manitoba’s efforts to help the province’s next generation of golfers to pursue their dreams. He says one of the top priorities for the sport organization is to continue to grow the game at the grassroots level. “I see some real opportunities at the grass- roots level. We want to get a golf club in the

hands of young people as early as possible,” he says. “We want to make sure that growth continues and we want to put some programs in place that ensure young people have access to golf. To understand what it is about and generate interest in the sport.” To that end, Golf Manitoba recently reached out to officials with the Seven Oaks School Division to discuss the possibility of offering a community golf coach program. As part of the proposed pilot project, PGA of Canada instruc- tors. would teach educators about the game and they in turn would pass on their knowl- edge to students as part of the PGA-delivered coaching initiative. “There are thousands and thousands of kids who take part in physical education every day. For someone who does not grow up in a golf household this might be an opportunity for them to get excited and interested in the game,” Ladobruk says, adding funding is still needed for the initiative. Another priority for Golf Manitoba officials is to ensure its supply of experienced and ca- pable volunteers is maintained, both now and well into the future. “We rely heavily on, and we’re very fortunate to have, a really solid core of volunteers. They really help. They’re our boots on the ground. They really make Golf Manitoba operate in terms of our championships,” says Ladobruk, adding enhancing existing junior and high performance programs will also be priorities moving forward.

Ladobruk was officially hired last July as the new executive director of Golf Manitoba, the governing body for golf in the province. While he’s still relatively new to the job, he brings a wealth of experience to the position. Now in his third decade of involvement with the local golf community, Ladobruk got his start competing on the local amateur scene and eventually played for both the University of British Columbia (1998-99) and University of Manitoba (2000-02), where he was co-captain of the Bisons golf team. He later obtained his Class A professional designation from the PGA of Canada and served as an assistant pro at Quarry Oaks for three years before moving over to St. Charles where he worked as an as- sociate pro for another five. Ladobruk, a graduate of the Asper School of Business, eventually left his position at St. Charles to pursue a career in sport administra- tion and served as marketing coordinator for the U of M’s recreation services department for several years before being hired by Golf Manitoba last summer. The chance to return to the game that has given him so much over the years was simply too strong to resist. “When this opportunity became available I thought it would be interesting to get back into the golf business, but this time on the amateur side and the admin side. I thought this might be a neat way to get back in the game but on a totally different level,” he says of his role with Golf Manitoba.

Once the teams have been decided, team members will then fo- cus on getting ready to bring their A game in the crucible of team competition. “The beauty of the Games is that the kids will be playing under a different format, where the three of the best five team scores are counted,” Goodbrandson says. “We’ve found that the kids really enjoy it. They get to learn how to compete, and how to help out and cheer for their teammates. It’s a great way to introduce kids to tournament golf.” Not surprisingly, the Western Canada Summer Games has acted as a launching pad for many of Manitoba’s best young golfers. Notables include Aaron Cockerill, a current member of the Mack- enzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada who recently earned status on the European PGA Tour, along with former Bisons men’s golf team standouts Charlie Boyechko, Bryce Barr and Josh Wytinck. Bri-ann Tokariwski, the current head coach of the U of M Bisons women’s golf team, along with sisters Jenna and Camryn Road- ley, also played in the Games before establishing themselves as forces to be reckoned with locally and abroad. Cala Korman of Killarney – whose best competitive score is 85 – hopes to play well enough to earn a spot on the junior women’s squad. “I want to make the team, but mostly just want to learn and have fun,” says the 13-year-old, who aspires to one day play on the LPGA Tour. “I’d be excited if I made the team. It would be really cool to play for team Manitoba against other provinces like Al- berta and B.C.” Goodbrandson says the overall experience will be beneficial for each participant regardless whether they make it to Swift Current or not. “Every experience you go through helps you grow as a golfer. It’s neat to watch the kids as they go through training, qualifying and then playing in the tournament. Initially, they’re so nervous they can barely tee it up. Then you just watch them get better and bet- ter to the point that they get so confident that they really enjoy it (the heat of competition).” He adds that the benefits derived from being immersed in a com - petitive team environment go beyond golf. “It’s a great experience that builds self-confidence, creates friend - ships and generates lasting memories,” Goodbrandson says. “From a golf perspective, you never know where a kid might go from playing in the Games. Even if they don’t go on to play profes- sionally, they’ll have made lasting friendships and found a sport they can play for a lifetime.”

The future of junior golf in Manitoba has never looked brighter than it does heading into the 2019 golf season, reports Garth Goodbrandson, Golf Manitoba’s director of player development. “In particular, interest in vying for spots on the boys and girls teams that will compete in the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current, Sask. from Aug. 13 to 18 has been at a record-high level,” Goodbrandson says. “We started with a meeting in December with the players to ex- plain our program and do fitness testing,” he adds, noting each team will be comprised of five players 16 years of age and under. “Then, in January, we started weekly practice at the Golf Dome. Attendance was excellent.” While there was a healthy contingent of boys on hand, the number of girls in attendance was even more impressive. “The kids were really keen, especially the girls,” he says. “We actu - ally had 11 girls aged 15 and under come out, with most of them being 13 or 14. They’re very athletic, and hit the ball hard. More girls are coming into the sport with hockey and gymnastics back- grounds, so they can really hit the ball a long way.” Over the next few months, Goodbrandson and his staff will be charged with the task of harnessing all that raw talent – a process that’s been moving forward steadily since the start of the year. “Basically, we introduced the kids to things like developing good practice habits, pre-shot routines and course manage- ment,” he says. “The goal is to make things fun so they develop a passion for the sport. We also brought out the University of Manitoba’s men’s and women’s teams to practice with the kids. They gave them role models to look up to, and someone for the kids to mirror.” Now that spring has arrived, the training will continue outdoors – and competition for the five spots on each team will get real. “Qualifying starts in May,” he says. “Players will play seven rounds, with their top five scores being used. Qualifying finishes at the Manitoba Junior, which will be played in early July (July 6 to 9 for men July 7 to 9 for women). Having the last qualifying rounds come down to those tournaments really builds excitement. It of- ten goes down to the last round, even the last hole.”

tendents Association – is to recognize and promote the history of golf in Manitoba,” says Don MacDonald, president of the Hall of Fame & Museum. “We inducted eight people each in our first two years. After that, we’ve inducted four per year.” At present, the total number of inductees (both players and builders) stands at 71, along with two teams (which includes the 1974 men’s Willingdon Cup team, the first to win a national title). All their names, along with playing records and accomplishments can be found on the Hall of Fame & Museum’s website at manitobagolf- halloffame.com. MacDonald is quick to note that, for the most part, the Hall of Fame & Museum is a virtual entity. “Actually, we don’t have a physical location,” he says. “We’ve just chosen to have golf displays at the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame every now and then. We have bios and information on all inductees on our website, along with some pho- tos of artifacts. Everything seems to work best that way.” The important thing is that the best of the best in Manitoba golf – the group includes media standouts such as Bob Picken, Ralph Bagley and Ed Dearden – are recognized at an induc- tion ceremony that typically takes place in late September every year. And make no mistake about it, the best of the

BY TODD LEWYS Quick, put on your thinking cap: name the Winnipeg- born professional golfer who finished second at the 1969 Masters Tournament. Can’t remember? Well, turns out, it was none other than George Alfred Christian Knudson, who learned to play at storied St. Charles Country Club. Knudson eventually went on to win the 1954 Manitoba Junior, building on that accomplishment in 1955 with wins at both the Manitoba Junior and Canadian Junior. He would eventually move on to the PGA Tour, where he recorded eight victories – including three top 10 finishes in The Masters – from 1961 to 1972. Knudson – who also won the Manitoba Open in 1958, 1959 and 1960 – then retired from com - petitive golf in the late 1970s and went on to be one of the most sought-after golf instructors in Canada until his untimely death in 1989. Fittingly, Knudson was immediately inducted into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame & Museum when it was officially launched in 2003. “The purpose of the Hall of Fame – it’s a partnership between Golf Manitoba, the PGA of Manitoba and the Manitoba Golf Superin-

best have been – and will continue to be – en- shrined in the Hall. “Inductees include great players such as Knud- son, Dan Halldorson, Jim Doyle, Rob McMillan and Todd Fanning, Garth Collings, Marg Home- niuk and former LPGA star Gail Graham,” notes MacDonald. “Builders like Peggy Colonello, who was president of the Manitoba Ladies Golf As- sociation, and golf course superintendent John Steel are also in the Hall.” He adds that the latter two are in Hall for a simple reason. “Peggy was one of the best golf administrators anywhere – she actually was elected president of the Canadian Ladies Golf Association, an honour very few people from Manitoba have achieved. And John Steel – who’s regarded as the father of the golf course superintendent profession in Canada – was the first president of the Canadian Golf Course Superintendents Association.” Speaking of golf course superintendents, Clear Lake Golf Course’s current course superinten- dent, Greg Holden, was inducted in 2018 due to his world-class work.

“Greg came up with environmentally-friendly course maintenance practices that are being used by golf courses around the world, among them using cooking oils to make biodiesel fuel to run maintenance equipment,” MacDonald says. “He’s received multiple awards and was voted the 2017 Canadian golf course superin- tendent of the year.” Moving forward, the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame & Museum will continue to honour the men, women and teams that make Manitoba proud, on the golf course and as builders of the game. “The reality is that Manitoba has produced a lot of great talent in golf over the years, from play- ers to administrators. We will continue to do our best to recognize those people and to promote the history of the game in Manitoba in the years to come,” MacDonald says. Trophies and provincial golf artifacts from the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame & Museum will be on display at The Players Cup from Aug. 15 to 19 as part of Southwood & Country Club’s 100th anniversary celebration.
