Golf Manitoba – Developing the Next Generation of Great Golfers By Rebecca Hadfield for the Free Press
A Game includes: Pinnacle golf ball, ball marker, divot tool, tees, game & rules Retail $19.99 $ 14 99
There is a simple trick to getting kids involved in golf—make it easy and make it fun. Every year, nearly 5,000 elementary-aged boys and girls are introduced to the game through Golf Manitoba’s Golf in Schools program. Just over five years old, the pro- gram has been offering safe, inclusive, no- cost golfing clinics to schools throughout Manitoba. Children are introduced to the game with larger plastic balls and specially-designed clubs, allowing them to begin hitting the ball almost immediately. Seeing the ball in the air quickly piques their interest, and that initial success is what starts to build their interest in the game. Garth Goodbrandson, Director of Player Development for Golf Manitoba, is tremen- dously excited by this program and sees it as a terrific way to increase interest in golf, for both boys and girls. “If we can start them young, give them a familiarity to the sport, and develop their
passion for the game,” says Goodbrandson, “we will see more kids playing golf down the road.” To keep kids in the game, Golf Mani- toba also supports programs such as CN Future links, a multi-level program which helps young golfers between six and 18 years of age develop their technical skills and gain confidence as players. As well, young players of all skill levels are given the opportunity to learn, play, and compete through week long camps, offered in partnership with PGA of Manitoba Professional Glen Sirkis and the City of Winnipeg. Involvement in the Canada Games and Western Canada Games has had a signifi- cant impact on Golf Manitoba’s player de- velopment programs. Since golf was intro- duced as a sport at the games, in 2009 and 2011 respectively, young players have been following a more extensive, year-round training program. Formed two years in advance of the
games, the training squads take part in regular weekly practices and fitness train- ing throughout the winter, and a busy summer schedule which includes the op- portunity to play against club-level teams. The boys and girls in the program are also given the chance to hone their competi- tion skills by participating on Golf Mani- toba’s Nassau and Mundie putter teams, a decades-long tradition in men’s and women’s golf. Goodbrandson enjoys seeing the young participants develop their skills as players, but is also touched by the close friend- ships that he sees fostered by the program. “These kids go from not knowing each oth- er when they come in, to building life-long memories together.” Information on Golf Manitoba’s player development programs, including Long- term Player Development (LTPD) pro- grams for adult athletes, can be found at www.golfmanitoba.mb.ca

High-Tech Hybrids: New Technology A Boon for Players of All Ability Levels By Todd Lewys for the Free Press
Once upon a time, hybrid clubs were seen as defensive clubs. My, how times have changed. Today—more than 10 years after the clubs first appeared on the market—a new breed of high-tech hybrids are us- ing technology that’s allowing golfers to do more than simply recover from errant shots. Over the past two or three years, manufacturers such as Adams, Taylor Made—and now Titleist—have built the same speed slot technology into their hybrids that’s been used in both woods and irons. To say the least, that technology has made a huge dif- ference in the playability of hybrids. Previous to the speed slot technology, hybrids featured weighting set low and back in the clubs. That was a great feature, as it enabled golfers to hit high, soft shots from the fairway and rough, and to use the big- ger heads and low-set weighting to hit longer, straighter recovery shots out of bad lies. While those shots were higher and straighter, distance was still roughly the same—okay, somewhat better—than the long irons that hybrids replaced. Distance derived from using hybrids was better, and shot dispersion was better, but it would be fair to say that distance wasn’t explosive. The advent of speed slot technology changed all that.
Today’s hybrids now employ the same technology as seen in drivers (and, yes, irons). How does that technology work? Simple: a pocket or chamber is created behind the clubface. That pocket al- lows the clubface to flex at impact, creating more COR (Co- efficient of Restitution), or trampoline effect. “It’s tremendous technology,” said Southwood Golf & Country Club’s director of instruction, Tom Kinsman. “As good as the older models were, the new ones are better. They’re even easier to hit, and are more powerful.” Granted, older-style hybrids were more forgiving than long irons, but the infusion of speed slot technology— Titleist’s new 915 hybrids also feature a compression chan- nel to generate more ball speed—has made them even more forgiving. Like drivers, you can now miss a shot on the heel or toe and still get decent distance, and accuracy. Hit it in the cen- tre, and you stand to hit a rocket that soars high, travels far and, unlike hard-to-hit long irons, lands soft as a butterfly with sore feet. Without question, this is a boon for the average golfer, who can now replace their three, four and five-irons with hybrids that allow them to get the ball up in the air and hit more greens when they’re in the 180 to 200-yard range.
For better players, the clubs can now be considered of- fensive weapons. Whereas a strong low-handicapper may have been able to hit a traditional three hybrid 230 yards, they can now hit it perhaps 250 yards (or better). The results for low and high-handicappers alike can be dramatic: better recoveries, more greens in regulation and shots finishing in birdie range. “I think the bottom line is that these clubs, with their technology, will help all sorts of golfers play better,” said Garth Goodbrandson, director of player development for
Golf Manito- ba.“Try out a few different models and see which one works best for you. The technol- ogy really does work, and will help you enjoy playing that much more.”

Tips From Three Pros By Todd Lewys for the Free Press
Writer Todd Lewys asked three of Manitoba’s professional golfers for their tips on improving a game. Read on for your free lessons that are sure to shave a few strokes of your next round.
The Three Keys to Being on Target By Michel Pilon, Head Professional, Harbour View Golf Course To hit on-target shots, you must do three things. First, you must aim the clubface properly. To aim it accurately, don’t aim it at the flag. Instead, aim it at a divot or small piece of grass that lines up with the flag about a foot ahead of your golf ball. Aiming at an intermediate target is the best way to ensure accuracy. Second, step into the ball with your back foot square, and then aim the clubface. Set up in an athletic posture with your knees slightly flexed, butt out, back straight and arms hanging down naturally to the ball. Last but certainly not least, you need to complement that good set-up with a good finish. That means ending up in perfect balance with your spine angle the same at the finish as it was at address. If you can hold your finish, that means you swung under control, and likely hit a straight, solid shot. Finish out of balance to the left or right, and chances are you’ve missed your target well to the left or right. Think 1-2-3: set up right, aim properly, and then finish in balance. Do those three things, and you’ll play your best golf ever!
a longer club. The photo sequence shows this: you can see the ball remains two inches or so inside my front (left) foot. The only thing that’s changed is the width of my stance. One more thing: make sure your ball position doesn’t get too far forward, or too far back in your stance. A ball positioned too far forward, opens your shoulders and can promote a slice, while playing it too far back in your stance closes your shoulders and can promote a hook. Incorrect ball positioning will also affect the trajectory of a shot. Keep your ball position in one spot—and point your toes out to help your body turn naturally—and watch your scores improve this summer! How to Attain the Right Angle of Attack By Tom Kinsman, Director of Instruction, Southwood Golf & Country Club It’s a term that golfers hear often, yet are unsure of its meaning: angle of attack Simply put, angle of attack refers to the angle at which the clubhead approaches the ball on the downswing. Most golfers struggle with the driver because their angle of attack is too steep—more of a chopping, rather
than sweeping motion. To hit the driver well, you want the angle of attack to be upward at the ball, not downward. Why? Simple: an upward hit launches the ball with less spin, resulting in longer, straighter shots. Angle of attack is determined by how you address the ball. Many golfers set up with their weight favouring their left side, which makes you feel like you’re looking at the top of the ball. Proper address position for the driver involves setting up more behind the ball. When you do this, you feel like you’re looking at the back of the ball. To create a more upward angle of attack with the driver, try this drill: set up with your head more behind the ball and more weight on your right side. Then, place a towel or sleeve of balls in front of the tee ball. Work on swinging up over the towel or ball sleeve. Hit it, and your angle of attack is too steep. Miss it, and you’ll know your angle is more upward. The result will be longer, straighter drives.
Constant Ball Position: The Key to Lower Scores By Garth Goodbrandson, Director, Player Development, Golf Manitoba There’s a common misconception about ball position: that you should move it back in your stance as you go from the driver to shorter clubs. Actually, ball position should be constant— about a couple inches inside your front foot. It should remain in that position with every club. The only thing that changes is where your back foot goes. With short irons, your feet will be closer together. Then, as you graduate from short irons to mid-irons and then to the driver, your feet will naturally be wider apart. Visually, it may seem as if the ball appears to be farther back with a shorter club, and farther up with

Experience Bully Pulpit Golf Course
T here are thousands of golf courses in North America, but one stands apart for its unique blend of rugged, natural landscapes and meticulously-designed holes. That course is Bully Pulpit, found in the North Dakota Badlands just outside Theodore Roosevelt National Park in historic Medora. From taking the top spot in Golf Digest’s “Best New Affordable Courses” to joining the exclusive ranks of Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses”, Bully Pulpit is a world-class experience you won’t soon forget. While some courses impose themselves on the landscape, Bully Pulpit is ramatically different. You’ll find yourself climbing through captivating Badlands vistas, weaving through meadows and woodlands and meandering along the Little Missouri River, fully immersed in the beauty of the landscape all around you. Bully Pulpit was designed by Michael John Hurdzan, former president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and “triple crown” winner of the Old Tom Morris Award, Don A. Rossi Award and Donald Ross Award. Hurdzan said of Bully Pulpit, “Although I have seen thousands of potential golf course sites, this one near Medora, North Dakota, may be the best I have seen without ocean views.” Golfers of all skill levels will love playing at Bully Pulpit. The 18- hole course features five tees, ranging in length from a comfortable 4,750 total yards from the forward tees to a challenging 7,166 at the tips. It also has a state-of-the-art practice facility for dialing in your game before heading out to play. The course is open from early April through mid- October. Tee time reservations are available starting in mid-March at medora.com or by calling 1-800-MEDORA-1. At Bully Pulpit Golf Course, you’ll take your game to somewhere altogether different and have the golfing experience of a lifetime.
