Getting back into the swing of things
EXPERT SUGGESTS PUTTING IN SOME PREPARATION TO GET YOUR GAME READY By Todd Lewys F or some reason, few people think of golf as being a particularly demanding sport. Consequently, when the season starts, many golfers think nothing of flying out to the driving range to knock six months of rust off by pounding out a bucket or two of balls. That’s a dangerous thing to do, says Brian Buffie, a physiotherapist who specializes in golf-specific training at Sport Manitoba. “Think about what you’re doing for a moment,” says Buffie, a former University of Manitoba golf team member whose Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) certification provides him with in-depth knowledge of the demands of the golf swing. “Basically, you’re going from doing nothing to swinging a golf club. All the

rotation in a golf swing puts a lot of stress on your spine and hips.” Which is to say a golf swing places a lot of demands on your body – especially after months of relative inactivity. “Ideally, you want to almost overtrain your body in the off-season to deal with the demands of the golf swing,” he says. “But most people don’t do that. So, when you do go to the range, pace yourself. Don’t rake and hit one ball after another as fast as you can. Ease your way in.” The same sentiment also applies to playing that first long-coveted round of the year (which you already may have played without incurring any sort of injury). Again – in most cases – little or no preparation has been put into readying the body to swing a golf club at speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour. To compound matters, a high percentage of golfers – especially in today’s COVID-19 era, where arriving at the course early to warm up is a no-go – just run up to the tee, grab their driver and swing away without stretching. That’s a no-no, says Buffie. “If you can, warm up before you stretch,” he advises. “Go for a short, brisk walk, run on the spot, or do some jumping jacks or push-ups. Once you’ve done that for a few minutes, then start warming up.” Once again, the key is to ease the body into a state where it can comfortably accommodate the dynamic twisting and turning of your swing. “Keep your warm-up simple. Any stretching you do should be rhythmic, not static. You want to ramp up slowly, doing exercises like hip circles and leg swings,” Buffie says. “Gently stretch out your groin, hamstrings and quads, and do some
thoracic rotation to loosen up your spine with a club behind your back in a seated position. That will loosen up your mid back.” Once you’ve done those things, it’s time to take a few swings. “Take slow rehearsal swings, graduating from 25 per cent slowly up to about 75 per cent. You want the swings to be rhythmic and fluid. It’s all about preparing your body for the demands of swinging a golf club.” What advice does Buffie have on the best way to prevent injury? “Get assessed by a professional,” he says. “If you’ve had any injuries or have any pains, they’ll pinpoint what the problems are and will prescribe
an individual program that’s tailored to what your needs are.” Regardless of whether you’ve been in a winter- long, golf specific fitness program or are starting from ground zero, Buffie says the same approach should be taken to getting back into playing golf after a long layoff. “Ease your way back into playing,” he says. “Your body will thank you, and you’ll give yourself the best possible chance to enjoy a fun, healthy golf season.”

Game enjoys surge in interest
Local golf courses have become a haven for people to be active outdoors while remaining socially distant.
thanks to pandemic
GOLFERS TURNING OUT IN HUGE NUMBERS FOLLOWING LOCKDOWN
By Todd Lewys One of the few good news stories of a pandemic-ridden 2020 was the resurgence of golf in Canada and abroad. Tailor-made for the pandemic, it naturally allows people to social distance while participating in an outdoor activity in a beautiful setting. As a result, there was a huge increase in people playing the game internationally, nationally – and locally. “It was a great year for golf in Manitoba,” says Jared Ladobruk, executive director of Golf Manitoba. “Even with a relatively late start in May, 21,000 more rounds were posted to the Golf Canada Score Centre in Manitoba in 2020 than in 2019. It just naturally aligned with safe activities you could do during the pandemic.” Kevin O’Donovan, the Winnipeg-based regional director of the Prairie Chapter of the National Golf Course Owners Association of Canada (NGCOA), says the work-from- home phenomenon spawned by the pandemic played a part in increasing participation. “Because a much greater number of people were working from home, they had more flexibility to play at

different times of the day,” he notes. “Golf was a great option. It was safe, and you could head out, play nine holes and be back in time to finish your work.” However, while companies encouraged employees to work from home to limit exposure to COVID-19, they put company tournaments on hold. “We normally start pre-booking company tournaments in the spring, but that wasn’t the case last year,” says Mike Pittman, who oversees business development and events at Quarry Oaks Golf Course in Steinbach. “Companies that had booked tournaments started calling me to cancel their tournaments.” Little wonder, as stringent public health orders limited gathering sizes and forbade two people to ride in a power cart at once. “The restrictions – particularly only allowing one rider per cart – were tough to deal with,” recalls Pittman. “Fortunately, the weather was nice, and we have one of the largest fleets of golf carts in the
province. Most tournaments were canceled, but we still had full tee sheets. We were thankful for that.” After much brainstorming, the management team at Quarry Oaks conceived a new tournament format. “We came up with a no-shotgun-start format where we blocked the tee sheet, creating a window where golfers could pick a time to come and play their tournament,” he says. “It still gave them that tournament feel, but there was no dinner after. Many people preferred it because it was more casual.” While a small number of tournaments were salvaged, the result wasn’t the same with weddings. “Pretty much all the weddings we booked last year were cancelled – we just had a couple of smaller events that we held in a tent with a roof and no sides to maximize air circulation,” Pittman explains. Pittman says the club is in much the same boat this spring.
“At this point, we really don’t know in which direction things are going to go. Numbers are still restricted due to the health orders, so we’re just being straight up with people when they call – we just don’t know how many people they’ll be able to invite. We’re just hoping the situation gets better by mid-summer.” In the meantime, Quarry Oaks – like countless other courses province-wide – will have to continue to think outside the box to generate revenue. “We’ll continue to rely on green fees, take out from the restaurant and boxed lunches and pre- portioned salads that we provide in our new casual tournament format,” he says, adding that the pandemic essentially eliminated office meetings and Christmas banquets. “The one thing I’ve noticed about COVID is that it’s made people a lot more understanding. They know we’re doing our best and are willing to work with us so we can all get through this together.”

Providing a solid foundation
ALEX & PEGGY COLONELLO FOUNDATION OFFERING MUCH NEED SUPPORT TO A NEXT GENERATION
By Jim Timlick
T hroughout their life together, there were few things more important to Alex and Peggy Colonello than the sport of golf. On any given weekend you could usually find them on the links or organizing events at Elmhurst Golf & Country Club, where they were members from 1948 until their passing. They also mentored many of the province’s top juniors over the years and spent countless hours giving back to the sport as volunteers. In fact, Peggy was inducted into both the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame for her efforts on the provincial golf scene. Although Alex (2003) and Peggy (2020) are both gone, their dedication to advancing the sport lives on. The Alex & Peggy Colonello Foundation was created in 2018 to support junior golf programming in the province. The foundation has committed $3 million to an endowment fund administered by Golf Manitoba that will support the next generation of golfers through grassroots initiatives and high-performance training. The idea for the foundation, not surprisingly, came from Peggy herself. A few years ago she learned that many of the top young golfers in the province were skipping inter-provincial competitions because they couldn’t afford to travel to take part. “I remember talking to Peggy about it and she said, ‘Why don’t they go?’,” says foundation president Marg Homenuik, who was a close friend of the Colonellos. “I said because they couldn’t afford it. She said, ‘Well, we’ll have to correct that’.”
As part of its mandate to make golf more accessible for young people, the Alex & Peggy Colonello Foundation provides funding to female and male golfers who have earned the right to represent Manitoba in national competitions to help offset their travel and equipment costs. It also provides financial assistance to the Golf in Schools introductory program, the University of Manitoba men’s and women’s golf programs, and the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame. In addition, golf courses throughout the province can apply to the foundation for financial support to stage junior training clinics. To date, the foundation has provided financial support to thousands of young golfers throughout the province, which is exactly what Peggy had in mind when she conceived of it, Homenuik says. She remained actively involved in the foundation until shortly before her death last April. “She was just thrilled with it,” Homenuik says of Peggy’s feelings about the foundation’s work. “She dealt with a lot of the juniors over the years…and knew some of them struggled to pay to go anywhere. She was so happy to do this for the kids. She was absolutely thrilled it was helping people.” Homenuik first got to know the Colonellos when she moved to Winnipeg as a teenager. She lived with them for a brief time and would often golf in mother- and-daughter tournaments with Peggy before going on to become one of the most successful amateur women’s golfers in Manitoba’s history.
Photo courtesy Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. Peggy Colonello was a mentor to many young golfers and was thrilled about the work of the foundation she and her husband helped to establish.
She says what she remembers most about Peggy was her boundless energy and her steadfast commitment to golf. She travelled the globe on behalf of the sport as a team manager, diplomat, captain and referee and served stints as chair of the Manitoba Ladies Golf Association (1975-76) and president of the Canadian Ladies Golf Association (1982- 83). “She just really liked to do that stuff. She was totally committed. She was unbelievably detailed about things,” recalls Homeniuk, who like her mentor is also a member of the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. “She was just so good for the sport of golf. It was her life.” For more information on the Alex & Peggy Colonello Foundation visit golfmb.ca.
