DEMAND FOR GOLF VACATIONS SOARS AS TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS EASED
“I’m telling people to book now if they’re looking to get away during the summer.” - Chris Smith
03 GOLF GUIDE 2022 M A N I T O B A
By Todd Lewys F or golfers, it’s something that’s been two years in the making: the ability to plan a vacation much like they would have in pre-pandemic days. Now largely free of the health measures that put a damper on both domestic and international travel in 2022 and 2022, golfers are back planning vacations at a torrid pace, says Chris Smith of Golf Canada’s West (golfcanadaswest.com). “We just finished taking bookings in April, and we’ve nearly surpassed the amount of business we did all of last year,” says Smith, whose company specializes in booking golf getaways to Alberta and British Columbia. “Lots of people are adding an extra night, they’re so excited. And we’ve also got a lot of clients booking from the United States.” Travel agent Christine Ward, who runs Great Escapes by Christine (greatescapesbychristine.ca), says golfers of all ages are already booking winter vacations, as well. “At this point, we’re seeing most people staying within Canada to take (summer) vacations in the Rockies, and Maritimes,” she reports. “Not only that, but people are booking winter vacations for places like Texas, California, Florida, the Carolinas, and Arizona. Still, it’s going to take a while for everything to get back to normal. People are still a bit afraid of COVID, and there are still a lot of issues to deal with.” One of those issues is COVID-related health restrictions, which can vary from location to location when traveling internationally, Ward says. “Right now, you don’t really need to deal with anything, but that could change at any time,” she says, adding
a good resource is apply.joinsherpa. com, a website that provides details on the latest COVID restrictions around the world. “It tells you what you’ll be dealing with when you leave Canada, and what you’ll need to do when you come back.” Ward adds that it’s also important to get the right type of insurance coverage when traveling outside of Canada. “Normal travel insurance doesn’t cover COVID if it’s a known event,” she notes. “You can purchase COVID insurance from Manulife or get an all-inclusive or premium protection plan that provides coverage for flight cancellation, trip interruption, baggage loss and COVID. Moving, forward, COVID coverage will likely be a staple with travel insurance. It’s a different world now.” Speaking of different, the rental car industry – a critical arm of the travel industry – is operating a little differently these days thanks to the pandemic. “Rental cars are still few and far between due to supply chain issues,” Ward says. “More than ever, it’s important to book well in advance and get written confirmation that you’ve reserved a rental car for your trip. And be prepared for the car rental to cost more, too.” And if you’re thinking of booking a golf vacation in Canada, now is the time, Smith advises. “I’m telling people to book now if they’re looking to get away during the summer,” he says. “At this point, we do have some openings left for June, but they’re filling up fast. If you book now, we can find you a good package for July or August. Typical packages are for four night and three or four golf games.” Continued on Page 04

interest with lots of bookings. Some people are staying in Manitoba or going to the next province, some are going a bit further.” That COVID-induced trepidation is understandable, O’Donovan adds. “It’s just where we’re at in the evolution of the last two years – people are at varying levels of comfort,” he says. “The golf industry will continue to cater to people with the realities of COVID in mind as it has for the last two golf seasons.”
One thing is a certainty as golfers get ready to spread their wings in 2022, O’Donovan says. “We’re set up for a great golf season. There’s a high degree of optimism, and golfers can take advantage of great courses, resorts, and campgrounds at home or in a neighbouring province. Or they can go further afield if they feel comfortable to do so. There are lots of options available, whether you want to play one round a week or go on an extended golf getaway.”
There are also good travel options available for people who are still a bit leery of traveling well outside of Manitoba, says Kevin O’Donovan, regional director, prairies, for the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA). “Many great options are there for golfers to take advantage of great golf in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan,” he says. “There’s been plenty of early

GETTING THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT, FIT WILL HELP YOU ENJOY GAME MORE
By Todd Lewys O ver the past two summers – which is to say during the COVID-19 pandemic – the game of golf enjoyed a renaissance. Because it’s played outdoors – and lends itself to social distancing – scores of people took up the game anew or returned to playing after drifting away for one reason or another. Suddenly, new golfers were looking for equipment, and those who hadn’t played for years ventured into the dark recesses of their basements or garages to find – and then dust off – their old clubs. Not long after, realizing their equipment – whether it was Uncle John’s old set of 1978-vintage Walter Hagen’s or the clubs that had performed well back in 1999 (was it really that long ago?) – left something to be desired, they went looking for something better. The next dilemma they faced was whether to buy new or used. Darrin Keats, owner of the Caddy Shed, says the age-old old new-versus-used debate was reborn. “Of course, brand new clubs are the better choice if you have the budget,” he says. “But not everyone does. And as good as today’s new clubs are, brand new isn’t necessarily better than a reasonably new set of clubs.” Today, it’s possible to get into a good set of clubs whether you’re on an unlimited or limited budget. That said, the key to getting the most out of a high-end or entry-level set is to have them custom- fit to your game, says Scott Staub, Caddy Shed’s resident club fitter. “The truth is that when you use ill-fitted clubs, you make a hard game that much harder,” he says. “We can get you into either a new or used set that fits your budget, no problem. But you need to get it fit to you. Doing that will help you enjoy the game more and play better.” Continued on Page 06

important, because it will help you enjoy the game, and the development of your game.” The good news is that there’s a wide range of price points to choose from with today’s proliferation of golf clubs brands. New iron sets range anywhere from $800 to $2,800, while demo sets and used sets can be found in pro shops and golf stores. “I’d say that even if you’re on a budget, it’s worth paying a CPGA professional or club fitter to fit you. Even bringing in an existing set – no matter whether it’s new or 10-years-old – for a fitting session always pays off, says Derrik Goodwin, head professional at Glendale Golf & Country Club. “If you’re going to play a lot or just occasionally, you need to get a custom- fit set,” he says. “We charge $75 for a session, and will look at things like proper length, shaft, weight, and grip size. We can optimize your driver and the other clubs in your bag. That’s

A non-traditional set of clubs can often work far better for an average player than a traditional set, some equipment experts say.

you find a deal on a set online. A CPGA pro or club fitter can easily retrofit the clubs to specs that meet your needs,” Goodwin says. Staub adds that club fitters will also assess a golfer’s game to determine what type of set makeup will best suit their game. “Often, we replace long irons with hybrids or lofted woods, or maybe we’ll add another wedge. Non-traditional set makeups often work far better than traditional ones for the average player,” he explains
So, no matter what type of set you buy – new, demo or used – get it fit to your game, adds Sandy Kurceba, associate professional at Assiniboine Golf Club. “It’s always worth it even if it costs $50 or $75,” he says. “In some cases, the fitting comes complimentary when you buy a set, which is even better. The bottom line? Don’t use an old set from the garage. Get a good new or used set that fits your budget and get it custom-fit. You’ll play better and, most importantly, enjoy the game more, whether you play a little, or a lot.”

GOLF CANADA INCIDENT PROTECTION A GOOD IDEA WHEN BAD LUCK STRIKES
“Another advantage of the GCIP plan is that it can potentially save individuals hundreds of dollars because they may not have to go through their home insurance provider to file a claim.” - Jared Ladobruk

09 GOLF GUIDE 2022 M A N I T O B A
By Jim Timlick T here isn’t much you can do to safeguard yourself against a missed putt or an errant shot into the rough, but there is something you can do to protect yourself against lost or stolen golf equipment and other golf-related incidents. The Golf Canada Incident Protection (GCIP) plan is available through Golf Canada, the governing body for golf in Canada, and its provincial partner associations including Golf Manitoba. It was first introduced in 2018 and is available to anyone who is a member of Golf Canada and most of its provincial partner associations and their member clubs. Public or non-club golfers can sign up for the program by joining Golf Canada or Golf Manitoba for $59.95 for 12 months. Jared Ladobruk, executive director of Golf Manitoba, says the incident protection plan was established to provide an additional value to anyone who is part of the provincial or national membership programs. The GCIP plan provides golfers with up to $6,000 in annual coverage. That includes up to $2,500 for damaged, lost or stolen golf clubs as well items such as range finders and golf watches. It also provides up to $1,0000 in window protection coverage should a stray shot hit a home or automobile window. In addition, it offers up to $2,500 in coverage in the event of a golf cart- related accident. Ladobruk says one of the best aspects of the GCIP plan is that it is applicable regardless of where a plan-holder may be golfing. That means the plan goes wherever a golfer goes and they are still covered even if they are on a long- awaited golf trip to Arizona or Florida. “For anyone who travels, this is really beneficial. It just gives you more options and a little more protection and peace of mind. You have some coverage that travels with you,” he explains, adding many airlines no longer pay for clubs
that are damaged during a flight. Filing a claim through the GCIP plan is relatively simple. Plan holders start the process by contacting the third party insurer who manages the program. They are then asked a series of questions including the date and amount of their loss and may be asked to provide proof of loss where possible. All claims must be filed within 90 days of a loss or incident. Once a claim has been initiated, plan holders are required to pay a modest deductible fee in order for their claim to be processed. The deductibles are set at $50 for window protection, $75 for golf equipment protection and $100 for golf cart protection. The amount someone receives as part of their claim is based on replacement value or the cost of the damages incurred. Ladobruk says another advantage of the GCIP plan is that it can potentially save individuals hundreds of dollars because they may not have to go through their home insurance provider to file a claim. “Traditionally, most golfers would go through their homeowner’s insurance provider. If you have a claims-free discount, that is eliminated because you’ve activated a claim which could cost you some real dollars for a number of years,” he says, adding deductibles for home insurance policies can be substantially higher than through GCIP. As most golfers can attest to, a good club doesn’t come cheap. A single driver can cost $900 or more. That means you could be looking at a loss of as much as $6,000 if someone makes off with your set of clubs from the bag drop at your local club. Ladobruk says with GCIP, if the value of the lost or stolen equipment exceeds the $2,500 maximum value, the plan will cover the deductible of a home insurance policy so they can then qualify for a higher replacement value.
