NET-ZERO HOME ALIGNS WITH SUSTAINABILITY- FOCUSED BUYERS BY MICHELLE BAILEY

The word butterfly symbolizes transformation, growth, hope and new beginnings. L ook no further than a recent build by Sterling Homes, a Qualico company, in Sage Creek where all of the above can be realized. The home at 110 Butterfly Way is for those buyers seeking comfort, modern style and long-term sustainability, knowing they are purchasing a net-zero home. According to the Canadian Home Builders’ Association, net-zero homes, whether new or renovated, produce as much clean energy as they consume. They are far more energy efficient than typical new homes and greatly reduce impact on the environment. Every part of the house works together to provide consistent temperatures throughout, prevent drafts and filter indoor air to reduce dust and allergens. The result: exceptional energy performance and the ultimate in comfort — a home at the fore- front of sustainability. It all adds up to a better living experience.

consumers right now, we’re always considering what trends are emerging to ensure we have what they’ll be looking for in the future as styles and the use of their space evolves,” he says. “Additionally, as a Canadian company cele- brating 40 years in business this year, prod- ucts that are made in Canada are particularly important to us and many local shoppers.” And, of course, a cozy bedroom space that blends fashion and function is top priority. Here are five on-trend ways to achieve just that:

1

A FASHIONABLY FABRICATED BED

“Upholstered beds continue to be a popular choice,” Magee says. “But the styles have evolved to include a mixture of materials, such as upholstery together with wood accents and tones.” Dufresne’s most popular beds easily transition between modern and rustic styles, he says. “Styles are modern but blend in with pieces you already have.” Soft upholstery with curvy, rounded shapes continues to be a popular option, while additional functionality like hidden storage, bookcase headboards and built-in lights are important features.

3 SPEAKING OF FUNCTION While functional, this trend can also be chic. Storage options like under-bed draw- ers and built-in shelves are essential for bedroom furnishings. NATURAL AND NEUTRAL

Grey and even greige are hues of the past, with shades of brown and soft neutrals warming up the furniture choices. “The return of natural wood tones is trending, not just in the bedroom but throughout the home,” Magee says. And while chests of drawers are still popular, Magee says the standard long dresser is still a bedroom staple because of its more spacious storage properties. A FOCUS ON WELLNESS

TV — OR NOT TV? Whether having a TV in your bedroom is a good idea or not — well, to each their own. The reality is that most people do it despite the focus on wellness and reducing screen time before bed. Rather than the traditional mirror, many people forego this option to put their TV on top of the dresser. Opting for a TV that complements the bedroom décor, like Samsung’s The Frame that doubles as framed artwork when off, helps maintain a clean, stylish look. “As somebody who is a big advocate for a good night’s sleep, television in bed is a bad idea,” Magee says. “Anything that offers additional stimulation just keeps you awake longer than you should be. While I wouldn’t recommend it, setting some boundaries and monitoring its impacts on your sleep can help to determine if it is more of a hinderance than a benefit.”

For many, the bedroom doubles as a per- sonal retreat within the home. “Adding accent chairs for lounging or reading enhances your bedroom and creates a space to unwind and relax, not just sleep,” Magee says. Rooms that don’t have space for chairs or loungers can still accommodate adjustable lifestyle mattresses, which are increasingly popular across all age groups. Mattresses that raise and lower the head and feet are especially convenient for those who like to read or use a laptop in bed, Magee says, but the health benefits are even more desirable. “Raising your head while sleeping can have health benefits such as alleviating back pain and reducing snoring,” he says. “When curating a space that is tranquil, your health should be at the core of these decisions.”

Foxridge Homes is known for thoughtful design, functionality, flow and attention to detail, highlighting elevated craftsmanship and luxurious finishes while offering style, comfort and quality. Their future-focused homes incorporate sustainability, energy efficiency and smart home technology. “ T here’s a passionate team — passionate about homes and how we are curating them,” says Colleen Chaput, marketing manager with Foxridge Homes. “It’s very much a collabora- tive team effort, and we are super-excited to present the homes, which have been very well received so far. Many of our show homes are sold already.” One current offering is a show home at 1 Fieldstone Cres. in Oak Bluff West, beside the town of Oak Bluff, where McGillivray Boulevard meets the Perimeter Highway. The family-friendly community in a quiet neighbourhood gives residents the best of both worlds: convenience of urban cen- tre amenities and the natural prairie land- scape of rural life. “It’s a beautiful area and it’s growing steadily,” Chaput says. “It’s so close to FortWhyte Alive and minutes from shopping on Kenaston Boulevard. There are spacious, wider lots — larger than typical city lots — which gives residents more outdoor space for gardens, play areas and patios.”

It’s very dis- tinctly ‘country feel’— quiet country living.” The 2,735-square-foot home at 1 Fieldstone Cres. is certified energy- efficient, featuring a high-efficiency furnace and air conditioner, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. “Qualico made the decision to move towards energy-efficient homes, and we are prioritizing that. We work closely with Efficiency Manitoba and a third party to test our homes,” Chaput says. “Buyers want to know that they’re being environmentally conscious with this size of home.” She points to their use of upgraded triple-pane windows with argon gas and low-e, noting a reduction in energy bills. The move-in-ready home features a 24-by-22-foot double attached garage with a rear pull-through door, which allows easy access to the backyard — and makes it a lot easier to move boats and lawn mowers in and out. The large rear deck looks out onto stun- ning landscaping details, inviting home- owners to spend ample time enjoying it with family and friends. The landscaping is all complete, and a designated landscape coordinator at the Foxridge office takes care of outdoor esthetics. “We did a lot of landscaping, put in trees, shrubs and large boulders,” she says. “In the rear of the yard, there’s a fire pit and a landscape berm with more trees and boul- ders. KITCHEN ISLANDS ANCHOR SPACE WITH FUNCTION AND STYLE

BY ERIN DEBOOY

Kitchen islands have not only become the centre of our kitchens but the heart of our households.

F rom a cooking station to a dining space, a social hub and even a tech centre, the kitchen island has become the anchor for many families in their main floor space, says Candace Rudd, general manager of Two30Nine by Decor and certified master kitchen and bath designer. “There’s definitely a lot of different iter- ations of islands over the years. What you saw in the ‘90s is very different than what you see in islands today,” Rudd says. “It seems to be more and more about personalization now. Everybody wants their own unique spin on an island to really make it their own — and to push the boundaries with them. They really are so multifunctional and easy to personalize to whatever the needs of the family are.” These days, more people are looking to integrate different types of appliances into their island, such as a secondary dishwasher or an extra prep sink. “Another thing that we’re starting to see in islands is hidden induction cook- tops,” Rudd adds. “Because an island is such a great prep surface, people don’t like to lose

space by putting a cooktop in. A lot of the newer countertops surfaces, like porcelain, work with hidden induction cooktops that can be installed under the counter, so you can still have an uninterrupted prep area with the seam- less, invisible cooking surface hidden underneath.” Some islands Rudd has worked on have even included a pet feeding station, with plumbing that runs to them so water bowls can be filled right at the dish. The demand for a variety of tech fea- tures has also increased as more families use their islands as a charging hub or even temporary workspaces. “There’s a lot of new wireless charging options that you can integrate into countertops, where someone can be charging their phone at the island just by laying it on the surface,” Rudd says. “There are different pop-up options as well where outlets and charging ports can pop up out of the countertop.” More thought is also being given to how to incorporate the functionality of growing technology without sacrificing on the design, Rudd adds.

something like a porcelain or quartz can be a good option.”

“In our market, we’re still able to incorpo- rate electrical into the sides of the island, but people don’t necessarily like seeing your tra- ditional plug on the side of their very decora- tive millwork. So there’s a lot of new options that can be painted out to look like the grain of the wood itself.” As for design, bold colours like deep greens and blues, oxblood red and char- coals have been growing in popularity, alongside natural textures like walnut and white rift oak. Incorporating a lot of different textures into the millwork by adding reeding or fluting has also become a popular touch. “Durability of materials is also a big source of consideration,” Rudd says. “If you want really hard-wearing countertops, something like a porcelain or quartz can be a good option. Natural stone can be more maintenance and susceptible to staining, so some of those aren’t the most durable option for an island.” Following the trend of bold colours and textures, statement stone is also in demand. Large veining and different treatments done with the countertops such as waterfall ends, thick built-up edges or pencil-thin edges are being included in islands more frequently. Designers are starting to also see a lot of curves incorporated in island designs, such as pill-shaped islands or radius corners on the countertops.

Incorporating a lot of different textures into the millwork by adding reeding or fluting has also become a popular touch.

“There’s a lot of opportunity for personal- ization. We’re seeing it from all sides, from the cabinetry to the stone,” Rudd says. “People want their island to be a little bit special and not just looking like cabinet boxes that have been lined up one after the other.” When contemplating what kind of island you want in your new home, Rudd recom- mends thinking about the layout, features and design early in the planning process. “Your builder or architect needs to consider things like the plumbing rough- ins and where the electrical is going to be, as well as planning for any lighting that’s going to go above the island,” Rudd says.

What Rudd loves about kitchen islands and their design process is the opportunity to think outside the box and push the envelope. “It’s a less intimidating way to incorpo- rate some of the trends with bold colours and patterns in your kitchen and get a really fun result.”

LAWN SPRINKLER SYSTEMS BOOST CURB APPEAL

BY MICHELLE BAILEY

For 65 years, Superb Sprinkler Service has been keeping everything from residential flowerbeds to large sports fields from being thirsty.

S ole owner Graham Petrie says the in Manitoba. “I have been in the industry for eight years now and started working while I was in university,” Petrie says. “I continued in the industry because I enjoy being outside and had always wanted to own a business since I started studying economics — so when the opportunity came up to purchase company came to life in 1957 and is the longest serving sprinkler business the business, it was an easy decision.” The Headingly-based company has installed more than 3,000 residential and commercial irrigation systems in Winnipeg and surrounding areas since its inception, an accomplishment owner Petrie says he and his team are extremely proud of. “We pride ourselves on delivering a high level of customer service that begins from the moment we are contacted to provide an estimate,” Petrie says. “It doesn’t end once the work has been completed. We continue

to be there for our clients even after their irrigation system has been installed.” Petrie says the way grass, shrubs and flowers get their necessary drink of H 2 O has evolved significantly over the years with budding technology. Superb Sprinkler Service relies on industry-lead- ing software to plan irrigation zones based on water supply and pressure. “We use highly efficient and smart watering systems from controllers to heads and design,” he says. “We pride ourselves on using the most advanced technology in the industry as water is becoming only more valuable of a resource — in addition to the time savings it can afford home- owners while offering a greener and more beautiful property.” With the most powerful Wi-Fi irriga- tion control solution on the market and water-efficient emitters, Petrie says going this route is extremely friendly to the envi- ronment and, in the long run, has a positive impact on the pocketbook.

An irriga- tion system will ensure health and beauty of your commercial landscape, reflect your professional standards and enhance your public identity.” Superb Sprinkler Service is also in the business of providing various options to further add to the esthetics of a property with modern outdoor lighting solutions. Petrie says decorative lighting enhances outdoor spaces, improves the safety aspects of walkways and decks, and discourages trespassing and theft. Similar to having a well-main- tained lawn, decorative lighting also adds to the curb appeal.

START GROWING SEEDS INDOORS FOR SPRING PLANTING By Janine LeGal The satisfaction that comes from growing a garden is a common conversation-starter among gardeners of all levels. And when that garden is grown from seed, the reward is even more immense and the exchange of gardening tips even more enthusiastic.

Gardening

S eed packets hold the promise of colourful and beautiful flow- ers but they can also offer a gar- den brimming with fresh vegetables, which come with all kinds of health benefits. Sowing seeds indoors and planning a dream garden can be a reality for anyone with an interest and a little dedicated time and space. It’s never too early to get growing. Jordan Hiebert, president of Lacoste Garden Centre, has been one of the owners of the family business since 2004. He got into the industry at a young age, and he still finds it energizing and rewarding. With rising food costs these days, there’s an increasing interest in growing one’s own food. “This business changes so read- ily, week to week. You get to invent what you think a garden centre can be and take inspiration from other places,” he says. “It’s a close-knit industry. We share ideas readily. I love my staff, how they exercise their creativity and share ideas.” With rising food costs these days, Hiebert says there’s an increasing interest in growing one’s own food. “We are hearing it and see- ing it. With food, our seed sales for doing indoor and direct seeding have gone up considerably. For many years, even pre-COVID, that was growing. There’s more signifi- cant growth in finished herbs and vegetables. Some people do find

seeding a little intimidating or they may not have the space.” But Hiebert says it’s not as com- plicated as it might seem, and he encourages aspiring gardeners to get to it and try out different plants. “Seeds are relatively affordable. It’s easy and not time-consuming, and you don’t need a ton of space,” he says. “Some people are afraid they’re going to screw up. Some things don’t work out. That’s why experienced gardeners have all made mistakes.” Gardening is a learning experi- ence and should be fun, he adds. The staff at Lacoste is happy to answer questions. “We try to be accessible, not intimidating. We are passionate about making sure people are successful.” Hiebert offered a few important tips for sowing seeds indoors. “Grow what you eat if you want a big bountiful garden. Do you really eat eggplants? If not, then that’s not what you want to plant. And grow what is expensive in the grocery stores. I don’t grow onions or pota- toes. They’re relatively cheap when they’re abundant. Try growing some things that are unique — like squash can be very expensive — toma- toes, peppers and chilies,” he says. “For the most part in Manitoba, we do have a long-enough season. Some things that can be a little chal- lenging are some of the hot chilies — the ghost peppers, the scorpion, the reaper — the really popular peppers. They’re the hottest in the world. If you’re starting those from seed, start them very early in a small pot or row seedlings before being transplanted up into larger pots, just as you would do with other plants.”
