Manitobans invest in renovating and repairing their existing houses as well,” McInnes says. “Our industry isn’t just about new home construction, although it’s an absolutely vital and key piece. We also represent a lot of professionals who do residential renova- tion and repair as well.” And that good news is expected to con- tinue into the near future. Industry forecasts are consistently showing that Manitoba should expect new housing starts to continue to rise over the next couple of years. The 2026 forecast calls for even more new home construction than in 2025 and that trend is expected to continue into 2027 before a return to more normal levels in 2028. “It’s excellent news — not just for our industry, but it’s also a good indicator for Manitoba’s economy as a whole that we’re going to continue to see population growth, we’re going to continue to see eco- nomic growth and we’re going to continue to see demand for new home construc- tion,” McInnes says.
“The unique aspect about Manitoba’s new home construction industry is that for the most part, the vast majority of our new homebuilder companies are Manitoba- based, Manitoba-started companies and so our industry is very much homegrown,” McInnes explains. “There’s not a lot of companies from out of the province who operate in Manitoba. The vast majority of new homes built in Manitoba are built by companies that are Manitoba-based and are headquartered here. Those companies are here, those wages remain here, and there isn’t a lot of money that’s being invested in residential construction that leaves the province.” While those numbers are impressive, consider that the overall home construc- tion industry (both new and existing homes) generates about $6.3-billion worth of investment, which helps employ more than 50,000 people directly or indirectly in Manitoba each year. “That kind of gives you an idea of the magnitude of residential construction in Manitoba as a whole, but it also demon- strates just how important and how much
