BUILDING INTEGRITY INTO EVERY PROJECT F.C. Woodworks has grown in size, but its values remain the same BY SHERRY KANIUGA

A lot has changed in the woodworking industry in the three decades since Rick Mostert started F.C. Woodworks in a tiny, gravel-floored garage. What hasn’t changed is the fact you still won’t see him cutting any corners. Based in northeast Winnipeg, F.C. Woodworks specializes in custom woodwork and interior design, cabinet building, countertops, desks, feature walls and ceilings, and other unique projects for commercial, retail and industrial buildings in Manitoba and beyond. The company was built on a history of hard work and integrity, two qualities its employees have remained committed to ever since. “We work with designers and architects who come up with the latest and greatest in design to fit their customers’ needs. We come in to try to execute that design,” says Mostert, the company’s president and chief estimator. F.C. Woodworks’ custom work can be seen at BellMTS Place, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and IG Field, to name just a few spots around Winnipeg. They just completed

work on True North Square’s office building and residential tower and are now working on the new Diversity Gardens at Assiniboine Park. The company is named, like Mostert, for his two grandfathers, Frederick and Cornelius. Mostert says the F.C. also stands for Founded in Craftsmanship, Fine Cabinets, and Family Company – all things the business has come to be known for. “People come to us for the value, and the fact that we do good work and put out a good, lasting product. We have been around a long time, we have built that trust and we stand behind our products,” Mostert says. The decline in availability of quality wood due to overharvesting of forests, plus advancements in technology, have required F.C. Woodworks to adapt over the years. They now build with solid woods and veneers, plastic laminates and melamine. “The melamines are getting so good now – it’s extremely durable, and it doesn’t scratch as easily.
