A ttention all shopaholics and bargain hunters. For the third year running, Selkirk Biz is hosting Black Friday Weekend to draw shoppers to the city. From Nov. 28 - 30, local businesses will offer discounts and deals to customers who travel from near and far for the extravaganza. Black Friday committee chair Rosalyn Church says it’s a great way to generate support for Selkirk’s business community. “There are other alternatives to going down to the States for Black Friday. Right here in your own backyard, there are really great stores that are offering a lot of amazing deals,” Church says. Black Friday is coming soon, and you don’t need to go south of the border to find super sales and mind- blowing markdowns. “It has created buzz in the community, and a lot of people are looking forward to it. With time, it will continue to grow and grow.” Last year, more than 50 merchants participated, up from 31 in 2012. This year, Church expects to attract even
more involvement. “It’s great exposure. To participate, it only costs $150. With that, you get attached to everything related to Black Friday. It’s a great way to advertise yourself,” she says. “It’s an exciting environment. In the past, we’ve provided participating businesses with Black Friday T-shirts, plus signage and decorations. It’s been lots of fun. You just have to come up with something a little wacky to get people into your business. You never know what the outcome will be.” In previous years, customers flocked to The Upper Crust Bakery for 50-cent loaves of bread and to A&W for 99-cent Mama Burgers. And people are still talking about the $5 haircuts offered at Hair Fantasy for one day last year. Salon owner Connie Rapko is no stranger to Black Friday bargains, since she hosted her own sales events before Selkirk Biz launched the community- wide initiative. “I started on my own, but by banding together, I think it was one of the best things we could’ve done.
