did it with the Selkirk Biz, I didn’t have a really big sale at that time. We just offered from 15 - 40% off,” Rapko says. “So last year, my staff and I talked about what we could do to bring in more people. It would have to be something off the wall to draw people in and give them that incentive to shop here in Selkirk on that weekend. We came up with the idea of $5 haircuts.” More than 50 people came in for cut-rate coifs from Rapko and two other stylists. Others lined up for $5 grab bags filled with retail products worth up to $90. “It worked out really well. We drew a lot of people from the Interlake and surrounding areas. We actually had a lot of people from outside the community that spent their time shopping in Selkirk. From that, we gained new clientele and new retail customers,” Rapko says. “All in all, it was a very good weekend. I think it helped to promote sales in the whole community. It was worth the effort we put into it.” Black Friday Weekend also helps to promote Selkirk Biz, and attract new members. “Selkirk is a small city, but we have everything that you need here. If you’ve never been to Selkirk, it’s something to see and it’s not too far at all,” Church says. “For people who’ve never been out here before, they should plan to come for at least one day during Black Friday Weekend.
