“That’s when it got nuts,” he says. “It’s gotten to be where now we make frozen pizza and raise cattle (on the side) and not the other way around.” In 2018, their pizzas began appearing in grocery stores across Manitoba. They’re sold in Co-op, Safeway, Sobeys and Giant Tiger stores, and they launched in Freshco stores in late April. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Spenst Bros. was in a position to sidestep another potential crisis. As it happens, they were just about to launch a new website, where customers can shop for pizza and other items online. “We can actually deliver right to your door contactless, which is what is needed right now.” Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Paul believes there are still opportunities if businesses are willing to adapt to serve customers in a new way. “If you want to make something happen, you have to put the effort in and you have to go and

“We’re almost embarrassed that we have so much opportunity to grow, and we said this even before COVID, that as we grow and build and expand, the biggest thing that’s holding back our business is us. “We’re not a cocky business, but we take pride in making food the way Mom makes it.” ■
