TURNING MANITOBA’S ADVANTAGES INTO A COMPETITIVE EDGE
T here was a noticeable sense of ambition at the Canada Investment Summit this fall. Global investors, Canadian busi- ness leaders, governments and Indigenous leaders came together against the backdrop of a very dif- ferent economic environment than we faced even a few years ago. Geopolitical tensions are reshaping trade. Supply chains are changing. Economic security matters more. And governments and businesses alike are thinking differently about where we source what we need, where we sell, what we produce and where we invest. For Manitoba, I came home think- ing about one question: how do we capture our share of the investment and economic activity that will result from this shift? We have a compelling case to make. Manitoba has abundant resources, reliable clean energy and consid- erable strengths in agriculture, bioscience, aerospace and advanced manufacturing. We have critical min- erals the world increasingly needs. We have a strategic location at the
centre of the continent, access to tidewater and the infrastructure to connect Manitoba products to mar- kets around the world. But one of my strongest takeaways from Toronto was that assets alone are not enough. Economic potential only becomes economic activity when we create the conditions for investment, foster a competitive business environment, and ensure we have the infrastructure, people, energy and access to markets needed to turn opportunity into growth. This edition of MBiz explores some of the areas where Manitoba has a genuine opportunity to compete and distinguish itself. These sectors are different, but they are also deeply connected. Their success will depend on many of the same fundamentals: investment, infrastructure, innovation, talent, partnerships and a competitive busi- ness environment. There is considerable attention on Canada right now. Manitoba has an opportunity to be part of the nation's investment story. Our job is to make sure we are ready to compete for it. ■
