SUPPORTING RNs IN MEETING STANDARDS OF PRACTICE

PUBLIC PROTECTION – IT’S WHAT WE DO

All members of the public are welcome to attend:

As the regulator for registered nurses (RNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), graduate nurse practitioners (GNPs) and graduate nurses (GNs) in Manitoba, we’re about keeping the public safe. We ensure these nursing professionals practice in a safe, competent and ethical manner by: • setting education, registration and practice standards • supporting registered nurses in meeting these standards • taking action when the standards are not met Here are some of the ways we do our work: • we have a registration process to ensure registrants are qualified and competent • we set the standards of nursing practice that all registrants must meet every day • we approve registered nursing education programs • we receive and handle complaints about registered nursing practice and take appropriate action with fairness and transparency REGISTRATION The College receives hundreds of applications for registration each year. At the end of 2013, 13,619 registered nurses, nurse practitioners, graduate nurse practitioners and graduate nurses were registered with us. This number includes 1,187 RNs and NPs who were registered for the first time in Manitoba.

The College supports registrants to meet the standards by providing educational opportunities and resources and providing confidential consultation services. In 2013, our nursing practice team handled over 1,200 consultations on a variety of topics and College staff delivered dozens of presentations to registered nurses and other groups. COMPLAINTS PROCESS On the rare occasion when standards are compromised, we take action. We strive to do this with fairness and objectivity, to protect the public and maintain your confidence in the RN profession. In 2013, the College received 99 complaints. All concerns are taken seriously. If you have a concern about the practice of a registered nurse, please visit our website for more information or call us.

100 YEARS OF SELF-REGULATION

Many health professions in Manitoba are self-regulated and the College has been the regulatory body for registered nurses in Manitoba for over 100 years. From our humble beginnings in 1913 to today, we have seen many changes, overcome many challenges and helped pave the way for registered nursing excellence in Manitoba.
