IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK: RETHINKING WALLPAPER

Interest, texture, pattern, colour. These are words you’ll hear again and again when designing anything, but they might not be top of mind when you think of walls.
E nter the resurgence of wallpaper. Not your grandmother’s florals, psyche- delic velvet or ’90s pastels; today’s wallpaper options offer something for every taste, are easier than ever to apply (and remove) and can be used in more ways than you might think. Styles in home decor and trends, as well as in fashion, are extremely cyclical, says Jade Shynkaruk, lead designer at TENTEN Kitchens. She points to the return of Art Deco touches that are currently experiencing a resurgence almost exactly a century after their original rise. The demand for minimalist and Scandinavian- inspired design, Tuscan Revival and Modern Farmhouse have equally experienced a rise and subsequently fallen out of fashion. This does not mean that you should avoid committing to a design vision. Instead, look fur- ther into the past for a previously trendy style that is now on the upswing — or, better yet, artfully combine design styles for a space that feels less style-specific. Over the past several years, Shynkaruk has seen a renaissance in wallpaper use. “During the pandemic, and with people being at home more, everyone started wanting to make their spaces feel more cozy, more lived in, more personalized,” she explains. “I found that tilt towards more traditional design, a resurgence of that esthetic started up ticking in the early 2020s and, now, into 2026 it has fully taken hold.”
