Take a walk on any of the many trails located throughout the community and you will likely come across one of the numerous pieces of public artwork that pay tribute to John Taylor and the area’s history.
T he community is named in honour of John Taylor, one of the province’s founding fathers. Taylor purchased much of the land that is now Taylor Farm from the Hudson Bay Company in 1856. He began farming the following year and continued to amass large tracts of land in and around Headingley in subsequent years. He also served as the first MLA for Headingley and was a successful merchant and teacher. Take a walk on any of the many trails located throughout the community and you will likely come across one of the numerous pieces of public artwork that pay tribute to Taylor and the area’s history. Tara Reid, manager of sales and marketing with developer Qualico Communities, says those memorial landmarks are part of a con- certed effort by the company to honour the past in a tangible and meaningful way. “I think that’s something we try to incor- porate in most of our communities — add a little bit of the history of the community, some beautiful amenities as you’re kind of touring around,” she explains.
Development of Taylor Farm began in 2016 and the community has been growing steadily ever since. More than 150 single-fam- ily lots have been sold, most of which are under construction or have been completed to date. Phase 5 of development is currently underway. Not only will it add another selec- tion of highly sought-after river lots, it will also include a beautiful riverbank basswood forest that area residents will be able to enjoy. The forest will be easily accessible via the network of trails that dot the neighbourhood. “We are using the forest in our develop- ment and working around it so that we can preserve the beauty of it and the trees for resi- dents to enjoy,” Reid says. “If you walk through it, it’s just gorgeous and it’s a beautiful amenity to have in a com- munity. It’s pretty rare for a new development to have something of this scale in terms of an actual forest within it. It’ll be a real focal point. People will use it as a destination when they’re out walking their dogs or out biking with their kids.”
