It’s never too early to begin thinking about home security, says the president and CEO of a Manitoba residential security company.

Banks says that can help prevent a minor nuisance from becoming a catastrophic disaster that requires an insur- ance claim. “To have those life safety functions in the system originally is potentially going to save you from a lot bigger headaches down the road if something were to happen,” he adds. Banks says there are several things home- buyers should consider when it comes to choosing the security system that is right for their home. First, make sure you choose a system that you can communicate with through the inter- net or via a mobile device. Also, make sure it has the capability for future expansion so that additional smart devices can be added down the road and it doesn’t become obsolete. Banks also suggests that the system you choose is app-based so that you can arm or dis- arm it and receive notifications using a mobile device. You may also want to consider a system that includes a geofencing function that will alert you when you are leaving your property if you’ve forgotten to arm the system and ask if you want to arm it. “We’re all busy in today’s life and everything is always last-minute, so it’s nice to have that lit- tle reminder when you get in your car and with one press of a button you can arm that system from anywhere,” he explains.
